Marc Marquez states what people should not ‘take for granted’ after his dominant 2025 season

Ducati rider Marc Marquez will get his first chance to win the 2025 MotoGP title at the Japanese Grand Prix, after he left Misano with a lead of 182 points over Alex Marquez.

Only the Marquez brothers still have a mathematical chance of winning the riders’ title this year after Ducati ace Francesco Bagnaia was eliminated from contention at the San Marino Grand Prix. Marc Marquez has a 275-point lead over his factory Ducati teammate, Bagnaia.

Marc only has to extend his lead over his Gresini star sibling, Alex Marquez, by three points at Motegi to clinch the championship in the Japanese GP on September 26-28, too. The 32-year-old needs to leave Motegi with an advantage of 185 points over Alex to claim the title.

It is not possible for Marc to win the title in the Motegi Sprint, but the long-time Honda hero can seal the title in Japan if Alex is not the stronger Marquez brother across the weekend. It would only take Marc leading Alex in a Marquez one-two in the Japanese GP to get the title.

Marc Marquez thinks it is wrong to take him winning the 2025 MotoGP title at the Japanese Grand Prix ‘for granted’

Alex has only beaten Marc in three of the 16 Grands Prix so far in the 2025 MotoGP season, as the Gresini star emerged as the top Marquez brother in the Americas GP, the Spanish GP and the Catalan GP. It was also not until after Marc crashed that Alex led in Austin and Jerez.

Marc Marquez crashed in the lead of the Americas GP, which Bagnaia won, and fell trying to chase down Yamaha rival Fabio Quartararo before Alex Marquez won the Spanish GP for his first win in MotoGP. Only in Alex Marquez’s Catalan GP win was he in front of Marc on merit.

Yet Marc believes people would be wrong to take the Cervera native winning the title at the Japanese GP and matching Valentino Rossi as a seven-time champion “for granted”. He also feels the San Marino GP proved his point, as Alex and Marc Marquez both scored 25 points.

Marquez declared, via Motosprint: “People take it for granted that I’ll win the title in Japan. But here in Misano, for example, Alex and I scored roughly the same number of points. I like Motegi, but a lot can happen, and Alex has often been quick, too.”

Alex Marquez may be relying on Marc Marquez beating himself to delay his title at Motegi

The Japanese GP at Motegi on September 28 is now the earliest that Marc Marquez can win the 2025 MotoGP riders’ title. The Motegi Sprint might have potentially been his first match point for this term’s title, were it not for Marquez crashing in the lead of the Misano Sprint.

Alex Marquez was only able to benefit from his brother’s fall to finish in second place when he needed to beat Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi and win the Misano Sprint to delay Marc’s title bid until the Indonesian Grand Prix. Alex also finished third as Marc won the San Marino GP.

Second in the Sprint and third in the San Marino GP ensured Alex scored the same 25 points at Misano as Marc secured by winning the Grand Prix. A repeat at Motegi would be enough for Alex to halt Marc’s coronation until at least the Indonesian GP weekend on October 3-5.

Yet the adage of Marc Marquez being the only rider who can beat Marc Marquez likely rings true in Alex Marquez’s bid to prevent his brother from becoming a seven-time champion in Japan. Marc has three MotoGP Japanese GP wins, while Alex has not come higher than P13.
