Marc Marquez reveals what he did behind the scenes after blowing Austin win in dramatic crash

Marc Marquez has enjoyed a near-perfect start to the 2025 MotoGP season. The Ducati rider leads the championship by 17 points.

The Spaniard moved to the factory team after finishing third with Gresini in 2024. Partnering with Francesco Bagnaia at Ducati, he was instantly tipped as a favourite for the title.

Marquez was diplomatic about his title chances, attempting to take the pressure off himself. But after pre-season testing, it was clear the six-time MotoGP champion would be in contention for a seventh championship.

After eight races in 2025, Marquez has won seven and claimed pole position in every round thus far. The Spaniard has faced challenges this season, but has mostly steered his Ducati out of sight and to the top step.

Heading into the Spanish Grand Prix, only one race in 2025 has denied him perfection. Marquez crashed out from the lead of the Grand Prix of the Americas, handing the win to teammate Bagnaia.

Marc Marquez spent two to three days thinking about what caused his Austin crash

The accident was reminiscent of his 2024 retirement, having fallen at turn one with Gresini from a winning position. Bagnaia sensed Marquez would crash due to his history of incidents while in front.

Marquez was apologetic after his crash, having run too high on the wet curb at turn four. But it seems the mistake played on the Ducati rider’s mind.

Speaking with his sponsor Estrella Galicia, the 32-year-old revealed he spent up to three days thinking about what caused the accident. Marquez is one to strive for ‘perfection’, but admitted he can be too ‘self-demanding.’

“Both in real life and my personal life, I have always tried to be as realistic as possible. When something is black, no matter how much you want to see it as white, it is black

“That’s where if you want to see it as white, little by little you have to change it and yes, many times, for example this year, without going any further in my professional life, the fall of Austin.

“Well, I spent two, three days thinking about the issue of why it happened, how I can improve. Yes, that maybe sometimes I am too self-demanding, but then in my personal life I also like perfection.”

Can Francesco Bagnaia mount a challenge to Marc Marquez for the 2025 title?

After winning in Austin, Bagnaia put himself back in the conversation for the title. Heading into Qatar – a strong track for the Italian – he was expected to take advantage and claim victory.

However, the advantage was handed back to Marquez after Bagnaia crashed in Q2, leaving him 11th on the grid. He climbed to second in the Grand Prix – aided by Maverick Vinales’ penalty – but his Ducati teammate claimed pole and won both races.

The 28-year-old’s failure to beat his teammate at Lusail has put him in a tough spot in the championship picture. Aleix Espargaro says Marquez has ‘everything’ under control, with Bagnaia now facing a ‘very difficult’ title race.

Sitting 26 points behind Marquez heading into Jerez and with the Spaniard’s form, Bagnaia has a huge mountain to climb. Having won the last three events at Jerez, the Italian will be desperate to take the top spot again.
