Marc Marquez has been dominant throughout the 2025 MotoGP campaign, winning 25 out of the 33 races so far on his way to what looks like a seventh world championship in the premier class of Grand Prix motorcycle racing.
His closest competitor throughout the season has come in the form of his younger brother, Alex Marquez, who currently sits second in the championship with 330 points.
Following an injury-ridden final few years with Honda, Marc took a pay cut to move to Gresini in 2024, where he lined up alongside his brother Alex before the former’s move to the factory Ducati outfit for 2025.
He has been dominant ever since. Atop the GP25, Marc has won 11 Grands Prix so far this season, as well as victories in all but three Sprint races.

Marc Marquez needs 41 points to secure the 2025 MotoGP world championship
To put it simply, Marc needs to score 20 more points in the remaining six rounds (including the Japanese Grand Prix) to mathematically clinch his ninth world title in Grand Prix motorcycle racing.
With 12 points going to the winner of each Sprint race and 25 going to the Grand Prix winner, the maximum number of points that are up for grabs in the remaining races currently sits at 210.
| RACE | CHAMPIONSHIP LEADER | MARGIN TO SECOND PLACE |
| Thailand Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (37 points) | Alex Marquez (-8 points) |
| Argentine Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (74 points) | Alex Marquez (-16 points) |
| Americas Grand Prix | Alex Marquez (87 points) | Marc Marquez (-1 point) |
| Qatar Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (123 points) | Alex Marquez (-17 points) |
| Spanish Grand Prix | Alex Marquez (140 points) | Marc Marquez (-1 point) |
| French Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (171 points) | Alex Marquez (-22 points) |
| British Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (196 points) | Alex Marquez (-24 points) |
| Aragon Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (233 points) | Alex Marquez (-32 points) |
| Italian Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (270 points) | Alex Marquez (-40 points) |
| Dutch Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (307 points) | Alex Marquez (-68 points) |
| German Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (344 points) | Alex Marquez (-83 points) |
| Czech Republic Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (381 points) | Alex Marquez (-120 points) |
| Austrian Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (418 points) | Alex Marquez (-142 points) |
| Hungarian Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (455 points) | Alex Marquez (-175 points) |
| Catalan Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (487 points) | Alex Marquez (-182 points) |
| San Marino Grand Prix | Marc Marquez (512 points) | Alex Marquez (-182 points) |
Adding that number to Alex’s current points total, the maximum number of points he can finish the season on would be 540.
With Marc’s current total sitting at a staggering 521, the 20 points would take him above Alex’s maximum threshold and therefore leave him in a league of his own at the very top of the riders’ standings.

When is the earliest opportunity that Marc Marquez can seal the 2025 MotoGP title?
The earliest possible opportunity for Marc to seal the 2025 MotoGP title would be at the conclusion of the Japanese Grand Prix, if he is able to outscore Alex by at least three points over the weekend of racing.
To do so, Marc would be leading the championship by 186 points at the time the chequered flag falls in Motegi. For example, if he takes maximum points in the Motegi Sprint race, Marc will only need to finish ahead of Alex in the Grand Prix to be crowned as champion.

It would be a fitting site for Marc to win his seventh MotoGP title at Motegi, with three of his previous six championships being clinched at the Japanese Grand Prix in the past.
The Spaniard also holds the current record for the most motorcycle Grand Prix victories at the circuit with five. Three of those have come in the premier class, with Marc also winning there in 2010 in the 125cc category and in 2012 in Moto2.

How can Alex Marquez steal the 2025 MotoGP title away from Marc Marquez?
For Alex to steal the title from under his brother’s nose, a lot will need to go right for the 29-year-old, and a lot will need to go wrong for Marc.
Alex will have to out-score Marc by 192 points, at the very least, in the remaining six rounds (including the Japanese Grand Prix), due to the crucial factor of Marc’s current championship lead sitting at an incredibly healthy 191 points.
| RACE | MARC MARQUEZ | ALEX MARQUEZ |
| Thailand Sprint Thailand Grand Prix | 1st 1st | 2nd 2nd |
| Argentine Sprint Argentine Grand Prix | 1st 1st | 2nd 2nd |
| Americas Sprint Americas Grand Prix | 1st DNF | 2nd 2nd |
| Qatar Sprint Qatar Grand Prix | 1st 1st | 2nd 6th |
| Spanish Sprint Spanish Grand Prix | 1st 12th | 2nd 1st |
| French Sprint French Grand Prix | 1st 2nd | 2nd DNF |
| British Sprint British Grand Prix | 2nd 3rd | 1st 5th |
| Aragon Sprint Aragon Grand Prix | 1st 1st | 2nd 2nd |
| Italian Sprint Italian Grand Prix | 1st 1st | 2nd 2nd |
| Dutch Sprint Dutch Grand Prix | 1st 1st | 2nd DNF |

| Catalan Sprint Catalan Grand Prix | 1st 2nd | DNF 1st |
| San Marino Sprint San Marino Grand Prix | DNF 1st | 2nd 3rd |
| Japanese Grand Prix Sprint | 2nd | 10th |
That means that Alex will need to see Marc finishing outside of the top 15 in most Grands Prix, and outside of the top nine finishers in the majority of Sprint races left in the year.
The biggest points deficit that has ever been overturned in the history of the premier class came in 2022, when Francesco Bagnaia reclaimed a 91-point gap between himself and Fabio Quartararo to win his maiden MotoGP title with the factory Ducati team.
