Loris Reggiani says ‘no one’ took notice of eight-podium rider at COTA, they were all looking at Marc Marquez

Marc Marquez was finally beaten in 2025 at the Grand Prix of the Americas. The six-time MotoGP rider crashed out of the race from the lead on lap nine.

It was a repeat of what Marquez did last season – he crashed while leading for Gresini at turn one, handing the win to Maverick Vinales. In 2025, the Ducati rider was caught out in the rain as he ran too high on the wet curb at turn four.

Neil Hodgson could not believe Marquez used the curb in the wet conditions. His first crash of 2025 handed victory to his Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia.

Marquez was apologetic to his team after the crash. The Spaniard has now relinquished his lead in the championship to brother Alex Marquez, who finished second behind Bagnaia.

The Gresini rider has finished second in every race so far in 2025. His incredible start has been a shock to many – even teammate Fermin Aldeguer did not expect Marquez’s consistency that has seen him take the lead of the championship.

Despite the 28-year-old putting in another impressive ride, ‘no one’ was paying attention to what he was doing at COTA, particularly at the start of the race.

Brother Marc Marquez caused controversy on the grid as he sprinted to his garage to change to his second bike with dry tyres. All but three riders were on wet tyres on the grid, but nine others followed the six-time champion to the pits.

The chaos caused an aborted start, with the Ducati rider later saying he did it deliberately, knowing others would follow. Ducati did not tell Bagnaia about Marquez’s strategy as he copied his teammate by changing to slicks.

The move was something Loris Reggiani could not understand. Speaking on the #ZamTube YouTube channel, the former 250cc rider said ‘no one’ was looking at Alex Marquez because of his brother’s dash to the pits.

“It’s a thing, I don’t know, seems quite stupid to me in the sense that, at the moment there, it is clear that towards the end of the championship, if you have to mark someone you do it,” he said.

“But at the third race of the championship, I think everyone should make up their own mind. You need the slicks.

“Instead they all looked at what Marquez was doing. No one took care of what Alex was doing for example, who changed the tyres covered on the starting grid.

“Everyone had thought he had put from rain to slick but then it seemed to me that you said: ‘No he only changed the compound but I imagine the others couldn’t have known’.

“I mean, I don’t understand why everyone had to wait for what Marc Marquez was doing and then copy it and do the same thing because it doesn’t make sense so early in the season.”

Does Alex Marquez have what it takes to win the MotoGP championship?

Marquez Jr is relishing being on the Desmosedici GP24 in 2025. The bike won 16 out of 20 races in 2024 and is still proving to be a strong machine this season.

The Gresini rider has used it to his advantage to display brilliant consistency thus far. Aldeguer was in awe of Marquez as he leads the title by just one point over his brother heading into Qatar.

Surprisingly, the Spaniard is still yet to win in the premier class and he will want to change that in 2025. However, Marquez admits he is not ready to win the championship as he thinks Gresini are ‘lacking’ compared to Ducati.

The 28-year-old has been the Bologna squad’s toughest competitor thus far and shows no sign of slowing down. Mother Roser Alenta would prefer Alex to win over Marc as it would debunk the ‘lie’ that he is in MotoGP because of his brother.
