Fermin Aldeguer ‘didn’t expect’ one thing from Alex Marquez after Gresini rider took MotoGP championship lead

Fermin Aldeguer admits he left the Grand Prix of the Americas very surprised by Alex Marquez while his Gresini teammate took the 2025 MotoGP riders’ championship lead.

The 28-year-old leads the premier class riders’ standings for the first time in his career after Marquez continued his superb start to the season. He has now finished each of the opening three Sprint Races and Grands Prix in P2 to also head his brother, Marc Marquez, by a point.

Marc was on course to extend his championship lead at the Circuit of the Americas after the 32-year-old took his eighth COTA pole. Yet Marquez crashed out of the lead of the Americas GP, handing the win to his Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia who trails Alex by 12 points.

Fermin Aldeguer ‘didn’t expect’ Alex Marquez’s MotoGP championship-leading consistency

Alex leads the MotoGP standings largely thanks to his consistency of finishing every race yet in P2, while his brother Marc failed to extend his streak of finishing every race in P1 at COTA last Sunday. Yet Aldeguer ‘did not expect’ his Gresini teammate Marquez to be so consistent.

While Aldeguer always expected the 2019 Moto2 champion would be strong in Thailand and Argentina to start the 2025 MotoGP season, he did not predict Marquez would thrive at the Americas Grand Prix. He also doubted if Gresini running two Ducati GP24s would be enough.

But Marquez ran comfortably in the podium spots throughout the 19-lap race, albeit slightly detached from Ducati duo Bagnaia and Marc. Now, Marquez leads the 2025 MotoGP riders’ standings and Aldeguer would jump at a chance to be in the 2014 Moto3 champion’s place.

“I’m happy for his lead because the guy is working hard and is always aware,” Aldeguer told AS. “Even if it’s by one point, I’d sign up to be the championship leader like him.

“I didn’t expect that consistency from him. I knew the first two circuits could be favourable for him because I had good memories of them, but not here – even though he has a competitive bike now.”

Fermin Aldeguer backs Alex Marquez to fight for the 2025 MotoGP riders’ title

After seeing Marquez take the lead of the MotoGP riders’ championship for the first time in Texas due to his surprisingly strong consistency, Aldeguer is confident his Gresini teammate can now take the fight to lift the 2025 title to the Ducati duo of Bagnaia and Marc Marquez.

“Last year certainly wasn’t easy for him,” he added. “I think the guy is ready to fight for the championship.”

Alex Marquez has never enjoyed such a consistent run of results since he debuted as Marc’s teammate at Honda in 2020. Only once before during his rookie campaign had he registered back-to-back podiums at Le Mans and Aragon before waiting until 2023 for another rostrum.

The Cervera native will certainly have to hope that he can now continue to bring home great results and pick up the pieces should Marc Marquez and Bagnaia falter again. Alex Marquez must be there to pick up the pieces for the Gresini ace to win his first MotoGP title this year.
