Alex Marquez has continued his impressive start to the 2025 MotoGP season. The Gresini rider has taken the lead of the championship after the first three rounds.
The Spaniard has stepped up as the team’s lead rider after his brother Marc Marquez left for the factory Ducati outfit. Neil Hodgson says Alex has removed the ‘shadow’ of the six-time MotoGP champion – and his results prove it.
Alex Marquez led the majority of the Grand Prix in Thailand and Argentina, benefitting from either reliability issues or a mistake from his brother. Marc Marquez was content to stay behind and wait for an opportunity, eventually overtaking and winning both races.
The Marquez locked out the top two in both Grand Prix and Sprint in Buriram and Termas de Rio Hondo. The pair repeated that feat in the Sprint at the Grand Prix of the Americas, but things turn a dramatic turn on Sunday.
On lap nine, Marc Marquez crashed out of the race after riding too high on the wet curb at turn four. Teammate Francesco Bagnaia inherited the lead and cruised to his first win of 2025.
Despite the factory Ducati team winning every race so far this season, neither of them lead the championship – an incredible stat and testament to Alex Marquez’s solid consistency.

Fermin Aldeguer sends message to Gresini teammate Alex Marquez after becoming championship leader
The Gresini rider finished second behind Bagnaia in Austin with Fabio Di Giannantonio completing an all-Ducati podium. No other manufacturer has finished on the podium so far in 2025.
Marquez has finished second in every race thus far, with that consistency and his brother’s retirement at COTA seeing him take the lead of the championship standings.

The 28-year-old leads Marc Marquez by just one point heading into Qatar, with Bagnaia back in the title fight after his win. The Italian is 12 points behind Alex Marquez after a much-needed recovery from a challenging start.
Austin was a solid weekend for Gresini, as Alex’s teammate Fermin Aldeguer reached Q2 for the first time. The rookie qualified 12th and finished P11 in the Sprint before crashing out in the Grand Prix on Sunday.
Michael Laverty has urged Aldeguer to be ‘realistic’ about his rookie season after he sounded unhappy with his Q2 performance. The Spaniard got to watch his Gresini teammate take the lead of the championship from the garage after his accident.
Writing to Marquez on Instagram after the Americas Grand Prix, Aldeguer only had one word for his fellow compatriot as he said: “Waooooww.”

Alex Marquez is edging closer to his maiden MotoGP win
Alex Marquez has found a new level in 2025. The Spaniard looks much more confident on the GP24 – which won 16 out of 20 races last season – and has looked blistering quick at every round.
The Gresini rider is looking to take the fight to the frontrunners. Marquez has ‘ordered’ a new Ducati bike that only his brother and Bagnaia have – he has been training with a Yamaha machine despite riding with Ducati bikes since 2023.
Marquez is clearly trying to push on and reach the top step of the podium. Unbelievably, he is still yet to claim a victory in MotoGP since making the step up in 2020.
Mother Roser Alenta would rather Alex Marquez win over Marc as it would disprove the ‘lie’ that he joined the premier class because of his brother. Thus far, the 28-year-old is already proving that theory wrong.
