Marc Marquez’s shoulder injury at Le Mans may have saved him from continuing this season and riding through a lot of pain.

After suffering a crash at the French Grand Prix, Ducati announced Marquez needed surgery to recover from the long list of injuries he had been dealing with this season.

Marquez was understandably emotional in the immediate aftermath of the injury, given how much pain he had been dealing with prior to the incident.

Do you think Marc Marquez’s latest injury could see him retire at the end of 2026?

Marquez missed the French Grand Prix yesterday and is set to at least miss the Catalan Grand Prix this coming weekend.

But it might be for the best, as Marc Marquez was reportedly in greater pain than many may have known about this year.

Doctors say Marc Marquez couldn’t ‘anticipate’ recent injury issues that derailed 2026 season

Spanish outlet El Periodico spoke to multiple doctors familiar with Marc Marquez’s injury situation, and what the rider has been suffering through prior to his decision to undergo surgery.

Marquez was described as dealing with a ‘lightning bolt of pain’ due to the injury issues, while acknowledging that the rider couldn’t have anticipated the situation.

“We’ve all experienced a sudden blow to the elbow at some point, popularly known as ‘the funny bone,’ and it doesn’t even have to be a hard one.

“You hit your elbow without realising it and pinch the radial nerve, and immediately you trigger an involuntary, spontaneous movement that makes you instinctively pull your arm back, because it causes a kind of cramp.

“Many people suffer from sciatica and have a nerve in their back affected, perhaps because they made a sudden movement or lifted something heavy at some point. If you’re lying down, in bed, or sitting—that is, if you’re not moving—you usually don’t have pain or feel anything….

“I don’t know, pick up a book from the shelf, lift a glass from a table, pull a chair closer —and suddenly, the sharp pain, the lightning bolt of pain, appears, and you’re almost paralysed.

“This is a situation that Marc couldn’t have foreseen, or even anticipated. Why couldn’t they anticipate it? Because it happens involuntarily and, of course, completely unexpectedly, hence Marc’s inconsistent start to the season.”

Marc Marquez was ‘relieved’ after discovering severe injury issues required surgery

Despite Marquez being protective of his injury status being known within the Ducati garage, he was almost instantly relieved when he realised that he couldn’t continue riding with these injuries.

“He didn’t want it to be known, but after Jerez, when Marc discovered the problem preventing him from performing as he wants and is capable of, he felt incredibly relieved.

“That’s why he decided, with his medical team and Ducati, that he would undergo surgery again after the Barcelona GP.”

Marquez reportedly underwent successful surgery and is now back home recovering. But there are still several questions about his future.

There is now a vocal portion of the MotoGP fanbase that believes that Marquez should be done after this year and call time on his legendary career.

Whatever he decides, there is no denying that Marquez is now firmly out of the title race, not just because of his gap to championship leader Marco Bezzecchi, but because he is set to miss multiple races due to his recovery.
