MotoGP is shaping up to be incredibly exciting in the 2027 season with the rider transfers and rumours, but people seem to forget that there is a championship to be had this year.
When it comes to potential transfers, no sport in the world is as chaotic as MotoGP. With riders often signing two-year contracts, the rider market is pure insanity as most deals expire at the same time.
Take 2026, for example, where out of the 22 riders on the grid, only four officially have contracts beyond next year – Toprak Razgatlioglu, Johann Zarco, Diogo Moreira, and Marco Bezzecchi. Everyone else is a free agent in 2027, and as is often the case, there are ridiculous moves among teams.
FOUR YEARS?! 😲 Has Pecco Bagnaia made the right decision for 2027?
If reports are to be believed, some of MotoGP’s biggest stars are changing colours in 2027. Pedro Acosta is set to join Ducati, while Francesco Bagnaia has signed for Aprilia on a four-year contract.
The door has opened for the Italian as Jorge Martin is joining Yamaha in 2027, but Bagnaia will not partner with him after seeing their struggles with the V4 in 2026 testing. Yamaha’s second seat is unknown, as Fabio Quartararo is Honda-bound.
As aforementioned, this creates a truly exciting 2027 season, especially with the new regulations set to shake up the pecking order, thus making any move a huge risk. But what many seem to neglect is how negative an impact this all has on 2026.

2027 rider transfers are taking away the excitement of the 2026 title battle
With all the attention seemingly on the rider market and which moves are going to come up next, it does not feel like many are that excited for the 2026 season.
Now, that might be because many think it will be more of the same as 2025 – Marc Marquez jumps on his Ducati and disappears into the distance for an inevitable one. He is certainly the favourite and still has the best bike, but it could be a lot closer than many think.
Is this why Marc Marquez WON’T win the 2026 MotoGP championship?
Marquez has not fully recovered from his 2025 injuries in Indonesia, which has brought his rivals closer. Bagnaia and Alex Marquez look strong on the GP26, while Bezzecchi and Aprilia have made huge strides.
The 33-year-old may no longer be the favourite to win races, and it could be a close and exciting championship battle. Yet, the rider market for 2027 takes away that excitement as people are already looking forward to seeing Acosta on a Ducati, for example.
It feels as though people are already thinking about next year, the 850cc bikes and the insane transfers that are yet to be confirmed. The 2026 season seems secondary to that, which should not be the case, as it is what is happening right now.

Does MotoGP need a rider transfer window?
The other problem with the rider market is that these transfers are happening before the season starts. So, for example, Quartararo will head to Honda in 2027, but not before completing a final year with Yamaha.
This creates an uncomfortable situation for all parties, especially the teams, as they now have to deal with riders who are no longer committed to their project. This has sparked conversation about a potential transfer window.
The idea is that teams will only be able to sign riders during a select period in the season, as seen in football with the summer and January transfer windows. Aprilia CEO Massimo Rivola is in favour of the idea, as are several MotoGP bosses.
But the issue is that even with this system, it will never prevent riders and teams from talking and negotiating outside of the transfer window. It is a contentious topic, but it is one worth exploring for the sake of the sport.
