Yamaha are ready to formally offer Jorge Martin a MotoGP contract on one condition

Jorge Martin could be on the move again in MotoGP as he has been linked with a move to Yamaha.

The 2024 MotoGP champion joined Aprilia last year after quitting Ducati. He missed out on a factory seat to Marc Marquez after winning the title with Pramac, and subsequently defected to their Italian rivals.

Martin’s 2025 campaign was a nightmare, with countless injuries leaving him to compete in only seven Grand Prix. The Spaniard is determined to have an injury-free 2026 season with Aprilia, but it has already got off to a disastrous start.

Martin is missing the Sepang test after electing to have surgeries on his scaphoid and his collarbone, which he injured last year. It is a significant blow for Aprilia, but more so for the 28-year-old, as his future is now in doubt.

Aprilia prioritised Marco Bezzecchi and tied him down to a new two-year contract. With Martin looking to be second fiddle in Noale, rumours have now suggested that he could be bound for another new manufacturer.

Yamaha will finalise Jorge Martin’s 2027 contract on the condition that he fully recovers from injury

Reports have suggested that Martin will join Yamaha in 2027. The Iwata outfit have moved quickly on the MotoGP rider market after allegedly losing Fabio Quartararo to Honda.

Naturally, Martin kept tight-lipped on the speculation at Sepang, but Yamaha may be holding back their offer to the Spaniard. According to a report from Speedweek, they now have one condition for the Aprilia rider to meet.

Yamaha are ‘requiring confirmation’ from Martin that he is fully recovered from his injuries. This does not mean just physically either, as a ‘doctor’s note is unlikely to suffice’.

Martin must prove to the Iwata outfit that he can return to the form that won him the championship in 2024 and can fight towards the front of the grid. Aprilia teammate Bezzecchi has put the team in a position to win races, but the Spaniard’s value ‘will drop’ if he cannot deliver.

Jorge Martin is still Yamaha’s ‘first choice’ for 2027

Needless to say, Martin remains Yamaha’s ‘first choice’ for 2027. The team want to have a champion in their line-up if they do in fact lose Quartararo.

Yamaha are planning big moves for 2027 as they roll out the V4 bike in 2026. With Alex Rins’ future in doubt, they have numerous riders on their radar.

Toprak Razgatlioglu could earn a promotion to the factory team if he can perform with Pramac in his debut MotoGP season. But that will depend on whether the WSBK star can adapt to the premier Grand Prix class.

Francesco Bagnaia is also an option for Yamaha as he looks set to leave Ducati in 2026. The Italian would give the team two champions alongside Martin, and it could be the fresh start he needs.
