Jorge Martin became the first independent riders’ champion in the MotoGP era after emerging as one of the newest Spanish stars, so here is everything you need to know.
The premier class of motorcycle racing crowned its 30th different champion in 2024. Martin showed Ducati the error of their ways by beating Francesco Bagnaia to claim the riders’ title for Pramac Racing after the Bologna Bullets rejected putting the Spaniard in its factory team.
Winning the 2024 MotoGP title was also the final thing Martin did aboard his satellite Ducati for Pramac before moving to the factory Aprilia outfit for 2025. It marked a big change in his career, having only raced with Ducati machinery since debuting in the premier class in 2021.

MotoGP champion Jorge Martin won his first premier class race as a rookie with Pramac
Pramac gifted Martin a route onto the MotoGP grid after two seasons in Moto2 and quickly reaped the rewards. It took him just two races to stand on a podium with Martin reaching a maiden premier class rostrum by taking P3 from pole position in the 2021 Doha Grand Prix.
His first race win in MotoGP would even follow in Martin’s rookie season with Pramac come round 10 of the 18 held in 2021 at the Styrian Grand Prix, where he also scored pole. Had it not been for a torrid crash at the Grand Prix of Portugal, his first win may have come sooner.
Martin missed four of the first six races of his rookie MotoGP season after undergoing three separate surgeries to repair multiple fractures sustained in FP3 at Portimao in 2021. He had various impacts including four of 25G while barrel rolling through the gravel for 5.2 seconds.
It then only took Martin four rounds upon returning from his horrific injuries to take his first MotoGP race win at the Red Bull Ring. Staying at Pramac as Ducati developed the dominant bike would also see Martin emerge as a title contender in 2023 and then also win it in 2024.
Jorge Martin is a qualifying and Sprint specialist who won the 2024 MotoGP title

The consistency of Bagnaia during the 2023 season ultimately cost Martin the MotoGP title by 39 points but the Spaniard rallied to emerge triumphant one year later. By improving his consistency, Martin beat factory Ducati rider Bagnaia to the 2024 MotoGP title by 10 points.
Qualifying has often been where Martin thrives, with the Spaniard a specialist over one lap. But he also had to match the consistency that Bagnaia offered Ducati to beat the Italian for the 2024 MotoGP riders’ championship with Martin finishing 18 of the year’s 20 Grand Prix.
The introduction of Sprint Races to the MotoGP calendar in 2023 also gifted Martin another session to dominate with the Spaniard regularly at the front in the shorter format. Without a constant need to monitor his tyres, Martin can push his bike to its full limit in Sprint Races.
Winning races had become somewhat uncommon for Martin between 2019 until 2022, with just three Moto2 race victories to his name on the back of claiming the 2018 Moto3 title. He also scored seven of Martin’s eight career Moto3 race wins en route to the title by 48 points.
Martin also won the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup title in 2014 with a comfortable 57-point margin over Spanish compatriot, Joan Mir. A run of six wins plus four further podiums in 14 races also secured Martin his graduation to the world championship stage in Moto3 in 2015.
It was instead in qualifying where Martin largely showed his talent after graduating into the premier class. While Pramac failed to see their star score a race win in the 2022 season, the Tuscan team watched Martin score five pole positions and set a number of new lap records.
Eventually the Spaniard matched his qualifying speed with race pace and consistency to be the first rider for an independent team to win the MotoGP championship since 2001, when Valentino Rossi lifted the 500cc title, when Martin rode his Pramac Ducati to ultimate glory.
So, with that in mind, MotoGP News has taken a deep dive into everything that you need to know about Martin and what the current Aprilia rider’s life outside of the paddock is like…
Who is Aprilia rider Jorge Martin?

Jorge Martin is a MotoGP and Moto3 riders’ champion, currently competing in the premier class for the factory Aprilia team from the 2025 season. He joined the Italian squad for the Spaniard’s first time as a factory rider immediately after Ducati snubbed promoting Martin.
Aprilia signed Martin to a multi-year contract in June 2024 to replace their retiring captain, Aleix Espargaro, after Ducati elected to promote Gresini ace Marc Marquez to partner with Francesco Bagnaia. Martin’s first taste of Aprilia’s bike came in post-season testing in 2024.

Why is Jorge Martin’s nickname The Martinator?
Jorge Martin adopted the nickname The Martinator as a reference to the 1980s blockbuster movie The Terminator, given he shares some killer instincts on the track with the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger character through the Spaniard’s sheer competitiveness and speed.
Why Jorge Martin chose 89 as his permanent MotoGP race number
Jorge Martin has used 89 as his permanent race number since graduating to MotoGP riding for Pramac in 2021. But the No89 plate was not the one that Martin wanted, having ideally desired the No88 plate that Miguel Oliveira took as his permanent MotoGP number in 2019.
Martin ran with the No88 plate on his bike in Moto3 during the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 seasons as well as in Moto2 in 2019 and 2020. But he changed to running the No89 plate in MotoGP and Martin is expected to run the No1 plate on his bike at Aprilia in the 2025 term.
How good is Jorge Martin? Who has praised the MotoGP champion?
You have to be confident to be a great MotoGP rider and Jorge Martin rates himself as “the best” on the grid thanks to the Spaniard’s speed and ability to dance a bike on its limits. His MotoGP riders’ title in 2024 even proved that Martin had become a complete package, too.
While Ducati using Pramac to experiment with their engine in 2022 limited Martin’s chances and crashes were costly in 2023, he dialled out the inconsistencies to become a champion. Long-time MotoGP technician Ramon Forcada even felt Martin moved into another league.
Forcada said in May 2024: “Martin last year was nervous, under pressure. That is no longer the case. He gained this experience that he didn’t have before. He’s in another galaxy.”
How Martin refocused after the frustrating end to his 2023 MotoGP title bid also impressed Michael Laverty, who felt the Spaniard found the ‘perfect mindset’ to claim the title in 2024. Martin only failed to finish on a Grand Prix podium in four races and won three in 20 rounds.
“Hats off to Jorge Martin,” Laverty said on TNT Sports after the 2024 season-finale Solidarity Grand Prix of Barcelona. “He’s been through the wringer.
“Last year, he didn’t quite achieve it and he went away to work over the winter, became a stronger and more rounded athlete. He started the year with the perfect mindset, and he delivered. He’s the right person to be awarded No1 [plate] today.”
Meet Jorge Martin’s girlfriend, Maria Monfort Matutes
Jorge Martin does not currently have a wife but has been dating his girlfriend Maria Monfort Matutes since February 2022. The model and social media influencer is also a central source of professional but also personal support for Martin, with the pair often together at circuits.
Monfort is the granddaughter of the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, Abel Matutes Juan. She is also the elder daughter of Carmen Matutes and Basque businessman Alejandro Monfort, after whom Maria inherits her main surname.
Jorge Martin’s net worth
Jorge Martin’s net worth will start to hit higher levels as a MotoGP champion, plus also as a factory Aprilia rider rather than on a satellite Ducati at Pramac. But no reputable publication currently reports a net worth for Martin, with estimations of it often in the region of £1-4m.

Martin has missed a number of races of the 2025 season, due to several injuries. His first came during a crash at the pre-season test in Sepang, where he broke his right hand. Just weeks later he suffered a fractured left hand and was forced to miss the season opener in Thailand.
He returned to the grid at the Qatar Grand Prix but suffered a horrific crash on lap 14, which resulted in a collapsed lung and 11 broken ribs.
