Jorge Martin has suffered further injury setbacks ahead of the 2026 MotoGP season and the first official test in Malaysia.

The 2024 champion was hoping to have an injury-free season in 2026, after his first year with Aprilia in 2025 was ravaged by crashes and numerous surgeries.

However, Motorsport.com has reported that Martin underwent two additional surgeries during the winter period to address the injuries he sustained in 2025.

The first was for his scaphoid in his left hand, which he broke in a crash during last year’s pre-season test at Sepang. The second was for his right collarbone, which he fractured after Martin collided with Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi at Motegi.

While Martin did return to his RS-GP after both injuries, he clearly had not fully recovered. It was believed he was progressing well, but the Spaniard has decided to have further surgeries to make a proper comeback.

MotoGP fans feel sorry for Jorge Martin after ‘heart-wrenching’ injury setback

As a result of the surgeries, Martin has been ruled out of the first official test of the 2026 season at Sepang, marking the second year in a row that he has missed the session.

Reacting to the news on Reddit, MotoGP fans could not help but feel sorry for the Aprilia rider, as he suffers yet more time on the sidelines and away from the action.

“At this point, I feel so very sorry for him,” said one fan, while another replied: “Agreed completely. How much bad luck can one guy have? Really hoping for a resurgence this season.”

“Considering by his own admission he was in a very dark place and didn’t think he’d survive this last year, it’s heart-wrenching,” said one user.

Some fans had doubts about his season, as one wrote: “Looks like he might start 2026 on the back foot. Again. Here’s hoping he doesn’t find a way to make it worse by crashing in training or something.”

While another even questioned his future in MotoGP: “It’ll be interesting to see where he signs for 2027, his future is really in doubt it seems like.”

Finally, one user outlined the seriousness of his injuries: “This is why scaphoid and shoulder injuries are so dangerous and pesky. It’s almost been a year and the effect is still lingering on.

“We saw it with Maverick, Marc also said that his recovery was complicated. I just hope Martin only returns when he is fully fit. And reading this, I hope Marc also doesn’t rush things with his shoulder.”

Jorge Martin was worried he would never ride again after 2025 injury woes

Mat Oxley felt there was ‘something going on’ with Martin and his shoulder injury at Motegi, as he was not convinced by how long it took for him to recover before returning in Valencia. Sure enough, he has suffered another costly setback.

It is a hugely damaging situation for the Spaniard. Martin had one of the worst MotoGP title defences in 2025, and he is already on the back foot in 2026.

Martin ‘never’ considered retirement during his injury nightmare, but he was worried about not riding again due to the severity of his accidents.

He joins Fermin Aldeguer on the sidelines in Malaysia after the Gresini rider suffered a serious leg injury in training. Martin will hope he can make a full recovery and have a strong year with Aprilia in 2026.
