Jorge Martin will miss the Portuguese Grand Prix as he recovers from an injury sustained at Motegi, Aprilia confirmed on Monday.

The 2024 MotoGP champion suffered a broken collarbone in a crash with Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi in the Sprint race at Motegi. Martin required another surgery to fix the issue, ruling him out of racing action until further notice.

Martin was in tears as he apologised to Bezzecchi for the accident. It has been a torrid season for the Spaniard as he has been ravaged by injury in his first year with Aprilia.

The 27-year-old suffered multiple fractures in a crash in pre-season testing at Sepang, before a motocross accident kept him out for the first three races of 2025. When he returned to racing in Qatar, he fractured 11 ribs and suffered a pneumothorax in a crash with Fabio Di Giannantonio.

Martin eventually returned to action just before the summer break at Brno and was slowly rebuilding his confidence with the RS-GP25. But his crash at Motegi gave him another setback, with it now unlikely that he will race again in 2025.

MotoGP fans tell Jorge Martin to copy Marc Marquez and return in 2026 after being ruled out of Portimao

The Spaniard missed the races at Phillip Island and Sepang, with it now confirmed that he will not be at the Portuguese Grand Prix next weekend. It will mark the 15th race he has missed in 2025, with Valencia and the post-season test also being in doubt.

It means that two MotoGP champions will be out of action in Portimao, with Marc Marquez being sidelined for the rest of 2025 following his crash at Mandalika. Fans think Martin should copy the Ant of Cervera and return in 2026 when he is fully fit.

Many fans came to the Aprilia rider’s support on Instagram as MotoGP confirmed that he will miss the next race in Portugal. One said: “Bro should just come back next season and fully recover,” while another echoed: “Just rest out and get ready for 2026 man.”

One felt the Spaniard should copy Marquez with his approach: “Good Recovery Martin, Like Marc come back for 2026.” Another felt the same: “@89jorgemartin learn from @marcmarquez93 who had experienced setbacks for years but was able to bounce back with his champion spirit.”

“He should be back next year 100% fit and that’s it,” said another fan. Finally, one wrote: “JM89 come back stronger in 2026,” referencing his race number; he will have to go back to No.89 after losing the No.1 plate in 2025.

Can Jorge Martin be competitive with Aprilia in 2026?

Given the serious injuries Martin has suffered in 2025, it will be wise to miss the rest of the season. It is not worth suffering more setbacks, especially when he has already caused significant damage to himself throughout the year.

He will be looking ahead to 2026, which he hopes will be injury-free but also competitive. Aprilia have made huge gains in Martin’s absence, with teammate Bezzecchi guiding the RS-GP25 to one win and seven podiums.

The Noale outfit are starting to close the gap to Ducati and could mount a serious challenge next season. Massimo Rivola backs Martin to fight for the title in 2026, with Bezzecchi proving that the bike is competitive with his results in 2025.

Martin and Aprilia have a ‘pretty good feeling’, says Jorge Lorenzo, after their contract dispute earlier in 2025. With the drama firmly behind them, they can look ahead to 2026, where a title challenge could be possible.
