Jorge Martin is out of the Japanese Grand Prix after suffering an injury in Saturday’s Sprint race. It’s the fourth serious crash of the year for the reigning world champion.
Martin lost control of his Aprilia bike on the run to the first corner as he tried to make up places from 17th. Teammate Marco Bezzecchi was taken out in the incident.
Aprilia have confirmed that Bezzecchi, who has escaped with bruising, will be able to race on Sunday. But Martin won’t take any further part in the weekend after suffering a displaced fracture of the right collarbone.
Martin was injured twice in the winter, ruling him out until April’s Qatar GP. He feared for his life after Fabio Di Giannantonio hit him at Lusail, an incident that left him with 11 broken ribs and a collapsed lung.
After a prolonged hospital stay, Martin began a slow rehabilitation process that culminated in his comeback in the Czech Republic just before the summer break. He’s been building his fitness across the last six events, but now he’s been sidelined again.
Jorge Martin needs surgery on Japanese Grand Prix injury
Speaking to DAZN, MotoGP doctor Angel Charte said a CT scan would determine whether Martin had to undergo another operation in Europe.
Martin was seen leaving the circuit by helicopter as he headed to a nearby hospital for further examinations. Aprilia have since confirmed that he will indeed require surgery, which will take place on Monday, but it’s too early to estimate a recovery timeline.
| RACE | DATE |
| Japanese Grand Prix | Sunday |
| Indonesian Grand Prix | 3-5 October |
| Australian Grand Prix | 17-19 October |
| Malaysian Grand Prix | 24-26 October |
| Portuguese Grand Prix | 7-9 November |
| Valencia Grand Prix | 14-16 November |
The schedule works against Martin, though, with the Japanese Grand Prix the first leg of a back-to-back with Indonesia. There are only one-week breaks between the season-ending double headers.
“He has a completely displaced fracture in the middle third,” Charte had said. “He will undergo a CT scan to check for lung friction. Once the CT scan is seen, the decision on the surgery will be made, which will likely be in Barcelona.”
Neil Hodgson’s ‘silly’ verdict after Jorge Martin collides with Marco Bezzecchi
As he reviewed the replay, TNT Sports pundit Neil Hodgson said Bezzecchi was ‘lucky’ to avoid a more serious injury. Martin, meanwhile, could already be seen holding his collarbone when he came to a halt in the gravel trap.
Hodgson said the Spaniard’s move was ‘silly’ and naive, with the gap that he spotted always likely to close. The incident is a blow to Bezzecchi’s chances of finishing third in the standings, particularly with Francesco Bagnaia taking victory, but that naturally won’t be the main concern for Aprilia.
“He’s really tight, dirty part of the track, got it all wrong,” said Hodgson. “How unlucky to hit your teammate. It’s a silly move from the world champion, he’s going into a dead end. When you qualify that far back, there is no way…

“Where are you going? You know all the riders are cutting across you. Bezzecchi’s lucky really – he’s been collected, but that could have been a lot worse.”
Coming into the weekend, Martin said MotoGP’s ‘Hall of Fame’ had given him new motivation. He needs to win another title to qualify.
The end of the 2025 season was supposed to be a period of preparation before mounting a 2026 bid. Now that plan is under threat.
