Jorge Lorenzo pinpoints ‘critical’ Marc Marquez weakness at Misano that cost him Sprint victory

Marc Marquez had just taken the lead from Marco Bezzecchi in the Sprint race at the San Marino Grand Prix before his crash at turn 15, ending his race prematurely.

Marquez’s crash was met with cheers by those loyal to Valentino Rossi as he careered off the circuit and into the barriers.

The reaction is a result of the fierce rivalry between the former MotoGP rider and the current championship leader, one that has been boiling since the events of the 2015 season.

Bezzecchi went on to win the Sprint race at Misano as the Aprilia rider held off advances from Alex Marquez, who finished second.

It was the Italian rider’s first Sprint race win of the season, a format that the Ducati man has dominated during the current campaign.

Jorge Lorenzo highlights Marc Marquez’s previous struggles at Misano

Marquez stands in a league of his own at the Misano circuit in Grand Prix motorcycle racing. The Spaniard has won at the track seven times, more than anyone else at the San Marino Grand Prix.

However, in an interview with Motosan following the conclusion of the Sprint race at the Emilia-Romagna-based circuit, MotoGP legend Jorge Lorenzo disclosed Marquez’s previous struggles at the track, particularly at the corner in which he fell.

“I think that is one of the corners where Marc has fallen the most times on the calendar,” Lorenzo said. “I remember one with the Honda in which he tried to save it, although this time he couldn’t even.

“In training, he has also suffered many falls there for years. It is a critical corner; the rear has a lot of support, the front is freer and, coming from several right-hand corners, the front tyre has no temperature or contact. You have to be very careful and not exaggerate anything.”

The incident prevented the Ducati rider from continuing his dominance in the shorter Saturday races. Marquez has won 14 of the 16 Sprint races held in 2025, as he looks excruciatingly close to winning his seventh premier class title.

Jorge Lorenzo makes Michael Jordan comparison in reference to Marc Marquez’s crash

Marquez currently sits on six championship wins over a 13-year career in MotoGP, the same number of titles that NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan has in basketball. The Chicago Bulls legend is widely regarded as the best player to have graced the sport.

In his post-race debrief, Lorenzo drew a comparison to Marquez and Jordan through one of the latter’s most iconic quotes, saying, “Jordan once said that he had missed 10,000 shots, and that’s why he had been successful.

“What makes Marc Márquez great is his character, his ambition, and never giving up a race. But also, although rarely, two or three per cent of the time, it goes wrong for him. It’s logical, when you risk so much to beat the best riders on the planet, sometimes these things happen.”

It’s only a matter of time before the Ant of Cervera is crowned as the 2025 riders’ champion. The Japanese Grand Prix is the earliest race at which Marquez can clinch it, needing a good result in Sunday’s Grand Prix at Misano as well as in the Japanese Sprint race.
