Marc Marquez damaged his chances of clinching the 2025 MotoGP title at the Japanese Grand Prix after crashing out of the Misano Sprint race whilst leading.
Marco Bezzecchi went on to win his first Sprint race of the season ahead of Alex Marquez in second. The Italian rider took pole position earlier in the day on Saturday, whilst the championship leader could only muster fourth.
The result pushes Marquez’s chance to clinch the 2025 MotoGP championship back by a race.
If he finished the Sprint in first, there may have been a possibility that he would be crowned world champion after the Sprint in Motegi, but he will have to wait until the Japanese Grand Prix for his earliest opportunity.

Valentino Rossi was seen laughing after Marc Marquez crashed out of the Misano Sprint race
Following Marquez’s crash on lap six, cameras cut to images of Valentino Rossi standing amid a group of spectators who were all celebrating the incident. Rossi appeared to watch the accident unfold before laughing about it with those around him.
It wasn’t the best reaction from the nine-time Grand Prix world champion, who has millions of fans across the world as the most recognisable figure in the sport.
Rossi and Marquez have been locked in a feud since the events that led to Jorge Lorenzo’s maiden MotoGP title in 2015. Rossi believes Marquez aided Lorenzo in the final few races and has failed to forgive him since.
The Italian superstar’s reaction is the result of his desire not to see Marquez match his tally of seven MotoGP titles and nine Grand Prix titles.
Even so, Rossi is well aware of the dangers that come along with Grand Prix motorcycle racing, so to see him laughing about it as the incident unfolded was disappointing to say the least.

It’s not the first time that the Italian fans have voiced their disapproval of Marquez’s dominance in 2025. Fans booed Marquez’s win at the Italian Grand Prix earlier in the season, leading to a swathe of Ducati personnel making pleas for fans not to boo the rider at Misano.
