Fermin Aldeguer proved his credentials as MotoGP’s rising star at the Austrian Grand Prix as he grabbed his best result of the 2025 season.

The Gresini rider finished second after producing some stunning overtakes in the closing stages. Aldeguer had electrifying pace on the GP24 as he passed Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi and hounded Marc Marquez for victory.

The 20-year-old was going half a second quicker than the Ducati rider as he rapidly closed the gap. However, he was unable to catch Marquez as Aldeguer finished just over a second behind.

The young Spaniard pushed to the maximum to try and grab his first MotoGP win, but it was perhaps a little too hard. Marquez put Aldeguer in a ‘very difficult’ situation as he burned a hole in his race boot while trying to catch him.

His performance caught everyone’s attention in the paddock as he showed just how serious a talent he is. It has sparked conversation about whether Aldeguer could make the step to the factory Ducati team.

Luigi Dall’Igna says it is ‘impossible’ not to think about Fermin Aldeguer joining Ducati ‘one day’

Aldeguer has a works contract with the Borgo Panigale outfit, which could see him ride a factory bike in 2026. Dorna would back Ducati giving Aldeguer factory machinery, although CEO Claudio Domenicali is yet to decide his team’s roster for next season.

Ducati are ‘pampering’ Aldeguer as they view him as the future of their project. He wants to race in red, but interestingly, Aldeguer would not want to be Marquez’s teammate, stating that it ‘must be hell’ sharing a garage with him.

Ducati chief Luigi Dall’Igna was questioned at the Austrian Grand Prix about the Spaniard’s future with the manufacturer. Speaking with AS, he says it is ‘impossible’ not to imagine him racing in red.

Asked what he thought about Aldeguer, Dall’Igna simply replied: “He is pure talent.” Asked if he would join the factory team one day, he added: “If he continues like this, it’s impossible not to think about seeing him in red, because we feel good together.

“He’s doing well, and it’s safe to say that sooner or later we’ll see him in red.”

MotoGP legends heap praise on Fermin Aldeguer after stunning Austrian GP

Aldeguer’s result moves him to eighth in the standings heading into the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend. The Gresini rider received huge praise from many MotoGP legends for his efforts.

Jorge Lorenzo is reminded of Andrea Iannone by Aldeguer in how he enters corners. His overtaking and raw pace in Austria highlighted how highly some key figures view the 20-year-old.

Casey Stoner felt Aldeguer produced the best race from any rider in 2025 thus far. He gave Marquez his toughest challenge over the last few races as the Ducati rider had to push hard to keep his fellow compatriot at bay,

Marquez told Aldeguer to ‘be careful’ after seeing how hard he was pushing in the closing stages. The 32-year-old now knows that he has another strong rider to contend with at Ducati.
