Fermin Aldeguer shares how Marc Marquez forced him into a ‘very difficult’ situation at the Austrian Grand Prix

The Austrian Grand Prix played host to a stunning surprise charge from a rookie towards Marc Marquez in the closing stages.

Fermin Aldeguer scored his second podium of his short MotoGP career, earning a new highest finish of second place.

Out of nowhere, he flew past Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi before setting about Marc Marquez with just laps to go in Spielberg.

However, he would run out of time, as his fellow countryman crossed the line in time to seal a sixth consecutive victory in style at the Austrian Grand Prix. Late pressure failed to perturb him.

Marquez hatched an unsuccessful plan on Saturday, before bouncing back from a poor qualifying to win both races for the sixth successive weekend.

One would expect that Marquez knows it’s ‘career over’ if he pushes too hard and reinjures certain aspects of his body damaged in a mega 2020 shunt. It doesn’t prevent him from pushing on further.

Marc Marquez forced Fermin Aldeguer into a ‘very difficult’ Austrian Grand Prix situation by pushing

Marquez’s ‘spectacular’ MotoGP form has affected Francesco Bagnaia, but it has also hurt his rivals, who want to win.

Aldeguer’s late charge in Austria was the furthest anyone has pushed him over the last few races. He had to leave his comfort zone to maintain a solid gap.

Likewise, the 20-year-old chasing him had to push more than he might have liked to, leaving him vulnerable to a big off. Speaking to DAZN after the race, he mentioned how hard Marquez pushed him.

“On Friday and yesterday morning, we worked with high pressure because if we started from behind, we had to be ready to manage the front,” he said.

“I was able to overtake, be competitive, and when I overtook Pedro and got close to Bezzecchi and Marc, I said: ‘I can even win.’

“But it’s not easy to fight with a Marc Márquez who gives it his all, he made it very difficult for me. Look how worn my boot was – a hole under my big toe – My toe was burning and I couldn’t touch the rear brake.”

Has Fermin Aldeguer been the most impressive rookie MotoGP rider in 2025?

Aldeguer’s second podium of the season has put him firmly into the Rookie of the Season debate ahead of Ai Ogura.

He’s far younger and less experienced than his Japanese counterpart, but he has been on a faster bike. He’s also made fewer mistakes.

Now sitting eighth in the riders’ standings and 23 points behind both VR46 riders, his performances should begin to get some recognition.

VR46 made it clear they don’t want Aldeguer in 2026, but they might be forced to go back on their word if he continues to perform at a high level.

Being that close to the main satellite riders on a one-year-old bike is very impressive, and his rate of improvement shows that he could be up there with Pedro Acosta as one of the more exciting talents currently.
