Alex Marquez’s title hopes took a severe dent at the Czech Grand Prix as he crashed out in the early stages.
It has been a difficult last few rounds for the Gresini rider as he broke his hand in a crash at Assen. Marquez was caught out by Pedro Acosta as he did not know how to battle the KTM rider after so many duels with his brother Marc Marquez in 2025.
Prior to the accident, he had finished in the top two in all but three races. Upon his return at Sachsenring, he kept up that remarkable consistency as he finished second behind his brother in a chaotic German GP that saw only 10 riders finish.
Marquez was a ‘passenger’ in left-hand corners due to his injured hand, but was still able to stay ahead of Francesco Bagnaia in the tricky conditions. At the Czech Grand Prix, he crashed in practice, but his quick thinking to return to the garage was key in earning a spot in Q2.
Alex Marquez was compared to his brother Marc in that moment, but he could not keep up with the 32-year-old in qualifying, as he could only manage eighth, while Marc lined up second behind teammate Bagnaia.

Alex Marquez says finishing second in 2025 would be ‘magical’ as he admits defeat against Marc Marquez
Marc Marquez claimed his eighth win of the season and his eighth double victory of 2025 at Brno, extending his lead in the championship. His advantage over Alex Marquez is now 120 points after the Gresini rider’s DNF.
In the opening laps, the 29-year-old lost his GP24 and collided with Honda rider Joan Mir, taking them both out of the race. The pair were caught having a heated exchange by MotoGP cameras, with Mir furious with his compatriot after he was running an impressive P6.
MotoGP fans called for Alex Marquez to be banned for the collision. The FIM ended up landing him with a long-lap penalty for the next race in Austria, giving him more work to do to catch his brother.
But the Gresini rider is not too disheartened by being 120 points behind in the standings. While he admits it is now ‘impossible’ to catch Marc, he says it would be ‘magical’ to finish as the runner-up
Asked by GPOne if he could catch Marc, Alex replied: “The standings say yes, but I think it’s impossible, it’s very difficult. For us, being second is something magical, because it means we’re doing a great job. So I’ll try to recover and be ready for Austria.”

Alex Marquez is exceeding everyone’s expectations in 2025
It is no real surprise that Alex Marquez is embracing being second in the championship. Brother Marc Marquez has been almost unstoppable, but the 29-year-old has not displayed this level of consistency since he joined the premier class.
Alex Marquez won his first MotoGP race at Jerez after more than 90 Grands Prix in the sport. Despite being on a year-old machine, he has consistently been ahead of Bagnaia and Fabio Di Giannantonio, who are on factory spec bikes.
But after his crash at Brno, he has admitted that becoming champion in 2025 is out of the question. Alex Marquez said consistency will be ‘key’ in winning the title, but even as impressive as he has been, he has been nowhere near the level of consistency that his brother has shown.
Nevertheless, beating Bagnaia and finishing second in the standings would be a remarkable accomplishment, and one not many would have expected. Fabio Quartararo says Alex Marquez has been the surprise of 2025, claiming that the other riders have been taken aback by his performances.
