Alex Marquez was caught out by what Pedro Acosta did at Assen after so many battles with his brother

Alex Marquez is in doubt for the German Grand Prix next weekend after coming together with Pedro Acosta at Assen.

It looked like normality would resume at the Dutch Grand Prix as the Gresini rider finished runner-up in the Sprint for the ninth time in 2025. Brother Marc Marquez has won on all of those occasions, with Alex Marquez claiming the win at Silverstone.

Marc Marquez established his dominance on the field throughout the weekend as the Ducati rider claimed another 37-point haul. But his brother suffered his second retirement of 2025 after he tangled with Acosta.

The crash left Alex Marquez with a broken hand and in doubt for the next round at Sachsenring. According to Ruben Xaus, the Gresini rider was caught out by being in an unfamiliar situation.

Alex Marquez didn’t know how to judge Pedro Acosta in Assen battle after so many duels with Marc Marquez

The Spaniard has been so used to fighting with his brother and Francesco Bagnaia in 2025. Alex Marquez is 68 points behind Marc after his DNF at Assen.

Speaking via Duralavita, Xaus thinks he ‘took the bait’ against Acosta, having been so comfortable battling the Ducati riders. The KTM was a whole new opponent, and Alex Marquez could not judge where Acosta was ‘better or wasn’t better’ before they collided.

“This is what happened to Bagnaia a little, as he is not used to fighting with such people. Well, yesterday, Alex suffered what Bagnaia has suffered in recent races, which is fighting with someone he wasn’t used to,” said Xaus.

“Different lines, different braking. If he fights with his brother, with Bagnaia, Alex, it’s more comfortable for him because he knows what the bike is going to do at all times.

“The KTM, he has no ability to recognise where Acosta is better or wasn’t better. So, he took the bait with Acosta.

“Instead of being calm for two or three laps on the whole track, which is logical, because as a rider of this level, he wants to win and more and every race he is ahead [or] behind his brother and he has proven it.”

Alex Marquez infuriated MotoGP fans at Assen – Marc Marquez was not impressed

At Assen, Alex Marquez sparked more debate about how he is more cautious with his brother than when battling any other MotoGP rider. He seemed reluctant to make a move for the win during the Sprint race on Saturday.

MotoGP fans were furious with Alex Marquez, as in their eyes, they saw him playing second fiddle to Marc. The narrow track made overtaking difficult and risky, but it was clear that the Gresini rider was quicker in certain areas.

The championship leader came to his brother’s defence, with Marc Marquez being infuriated by Italian TV as they referred to Alex as his ‘yapping little doggy’. The 32-year-old also defended Marco Bezzecchi on Sunday, as the Aprilia rider found it difficult to pass the Spaniard.

Despite his retirement at Assen, Alex Marquez’s results in 2025 have got everyone talking up his ability in MotoGP. Jorge Lorenzo says Alex is ready for Ducati, having displayed strong consistency throughout the year.
