Alex Marquez has been the surprise package of the 2025 MotoGP season. The Spainard has emerged as a real title contender.

Riding the GP24 – which won 16 out of 20 races in 2024 – Alex Marquez has come to life. The Gresini rider is causing a headache for the factory Ducati riders as he battles at the front of the field.

The 28-year-old has finished second in all but one race so far in 2025. Marquez temporarily led the championship after brother Marc Marquez crashed at the Americas Grand Prix.

After finishing sixth at the Qatar Grand Prix, Alex Marquez has slipped back to second in the standings. However, his consistency this season has been incredible, but also unexpected.

Even Gresini teammate Fermin Aldeguer did not expect Marquez’s consistency, with multiple accidents proving costly in previous MotoGP seasons. The Spaniard showed signs of his old self, however, during practice for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Neil Hodgson ‘expected’ Alex Marquez to have more crashes in 2025 after seeing Jerez incident

Marquez continued his impressive form as he topped the timesheets in FP1 at Jerez. He went three tenths quicker than brother Marc in second, with Fabio Quartararo third for Yamaha.

However, the session was not a smooth one for the Gresini rider. Marquez fell off his bike at turn one with 18 minutes to go, sliding off the track on the entry to the corner and across the gravel trap.

Speaking on TNT Sports 2, Neil Hodgson said he ‘expected’ to see more accidents from Marquez this season. It has been the norm for the Spaniard in MotoGP since joining in 2020.

“It’s so easy to crash into turn one. Heavy breaking, you go all the way down into second gear,” said Hodgson.

“It’s a really early off, air bag went off. He’s gone in there pretty quick.

“I don’t mean to sound wrong but I expected more of this. This is the Alex Marquez that we’ve seen in his MotoGP career, lots of crashes.”

Can Alex Marquez continue his flawless start to 2025?

Marc Marquez has won all but one race thus far in 2025 as he leads the championship over Alex by 17 points. But the latter will be brimming with confidence after such an electric start to the year.

Alex Marquez is ‘faster’ than Marc in right-hand corners – an advantage he will look to exploit in his bid to win the title. However, Ducati’s superiority has given the Spaniard doubts.

Marquez says Gresini are ‘lacking’ in 2025 as he says he is not ready to fight for the championship. Incredibly, the 28-year-old is yet to win a race in the premier class.

But his form in 2025 suggests it is only a matter of time before the maiden win comes. Marquez has the same consistency as Jorge Martin, proving that first win cannot be too far away.
