Aprilia are about to ‘punish’ Jorge Martin for deciding to join Yamaha in 2027

Jorge Martin may not exactly be in Aprilia’s good books right now, and the team looks set to ‘punish’ him as he is not likely to ride their 850cc bike.

The Spaniard has had a lot of drama with the Noale outfit, spanning from last year with his contract saga to now, where internal feuds have been common in recent races.

Martin shoved Paolo Bonora in the garage after he collided with Raul Fernandez in Barcelona. At Balaton Park, he wiped out himself and three other riders, including Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi, at turn one on the opening lap.

Team boss Massimo Rivola blasted Martin to the TV media after the race, with the crash costing the team valuable points in the championship. Now, he is set to miss out on the first full-time riders’ test of the 850cc bikes, thanks to his move to Yamaha.

Should Yamaha be worried about Jorge Martin’s attitude after he shoved his Aprilia team members?

Jorge Martin’s move to Yamaha in 2027 means Aprilia will not let him test their 850cc bike after Brno

Martin is set to join Yamaha in 2027 alongside Ai Ogura. The MotoGP rider market moved fast over the winter, and the 2024 champion has opted to switch factories.

However, his move, among several others, is yet to be announced, as the manufacturers continue their negotiations with MotoGP SEG, formerly Dorna, over the next Concorde Agreement. This has several implications for the teams, notably with 2027 testing.

The 850cc prototypes have only been in the hands of test riders, but after the Czech GP, the full-time riders are set to get their first outing. The problem is that most are switching factories in 2027, and none of their moves have been confirmed.

With Martin leaving Aprilia at the end of the year, he is not going to be riding the 2027 machinery. It will instead, as per journalist Simon Patterson, be in the hands of Lorenzo Savadori and teammate Bezzecchi, who has already signed his new contract.

Therefore, Martin is set to lose valuable track time and preparation for 2027. He will have less time to adapt to Yamaha’s machine, whilst also being left on the sidelines by Aprilia.

Patterson discussed the situation on The Race MotoGP Podcast: “He’s also going to get punished by Aprilia, as a matter of coincidence rather than anything else.

Will Jorge Martin’s upcoming Aprilia exit affect the MotoGP title fight?

“Will they have the same equipment? Absolutely… The important thing is that the Aprilia wins.”

“But on the Monday after Brno, there’s the first test of the 850s for contracted riders. And from what we understand, teams are only being allowed to nominate two riders, and we’re expecting that not even every team will nominate two riders because of contractual situations.

“But I would imagine what we will absolutely see at that test will be Lorenzo Savadori and Marco Bezzecchi, who’s already signed a contract for next year with Aprilia.

“Bez will get to try the Pirellis and Jorge Martin won’t, because why would you anyway, whenever he’s off to Yamaha next year, but also tough luck, mate. You’re not allowed in the garage today. We’ve got a new bike that you’re never going to ride. Bye. See you in Assen.”
