Alex Marquez has shared that he felt very lucky after he watched back his Catalan Grand Prix crash from his hospital bed.

The Gresini rider is focusing on his recovery after his horror accident in Catalunya. On lap 12 of the Catalan Grand Prix, he was fighting Pedro Acosta for the lead when the KTM star’s engine cut down on the back straight.

Marquez had no time to avoid his compatriot and slammed into the back of him at high speed. He was sent spearing towards the wall in a shocking crash, collecting eventual race winner Fabio Di Giannantonio and immediately bringing out the red flag.

Alex Marquez realised how lucky he was after watching his Catalan GP crash

Marquez was conscious as he was taken to the hospital. The race was later restarted, before it was red-flagged again following a nasty crash for Johann Zarco.

Gresini confirmed Marquez was ‘fine’ as he awaited surgery for a C7 fracture. The team later announced that he would miss the Italian and Hungarian Grands Prix, with Michele Pirro replacing him in Mugello.

The Spaniard spoke out on the accident on his YouTube channel, revealing that he asked to see the crash when he got to the hospital. It was only then that he realised how lucky he was.

He said: “When I arrived in the hospital, I think it was 3:30 in the afternoon, about when I start to remember everything 100%.

“And I asked to see the crash, because I more or less had flashes but I didn’t remember them 100&, and I asked to see the crash for what I had been like.

“And at that time I honestly realised how lucky I had been, to avoid the wall on the right, at that moment, how I fell, and that’s when I became aware of all the good luck I had had.”

Alex Marquez says it’s a matter of ‘being 100% ready’ as he provides updates on recovery

As aforementioned, Marquez will miss the next two races, but it is unclear whether he will return to MotoGP after that. He says that it is not a matter of ‘when’ with his recovery.

He added: “It is an injury, or it is a fall where the impact is so severe that you have to sort of land again, isn’t it? On the ground.

“So it’s a process of about a week for the body to get back to some sort of normality after all that pain, but that’s when I’m currently focused on making a comeback.

“It’s not about when, but about being 100% ready, coming back and knowing you’re injury-free and can give 100% on the track. So that’s what I’m 100% focused on.”
