Gresini chief Michele Masini has shared that Alex Marquez is ‘fine’ following his horrific accident at the Catalan Grand Prix.

Saturday’s Sprint winner was involved in a sickening crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. He was challenging Pedro Acosta for the lead on lap 12 when the KTM rider’s engine suddenly cut out down the back straight.

What safety changes, if any, do you want to see after the Catalan Grand Prix red flags?

Marquez had no time to react as he smashed into the back of Acosta. He was sent spearing into the wall at high speed, with his Ducati GP26 disintegrating on impact and collecting Fabio Di Giannantonio.

It was also reported that Raul Fernandez was hit by flying debris. The race was immediately suspended as all attention turned to Marquez and his well-being.

Michele Masini says Alex Marquez is ‘fine’ and waiting checks in hospital following Catalan Grand Prix crash

Di Giannantonio continued and won the Catalan GP, albeit with an injured left hand after colliding with Marquez’s destroyed bike.

MotoGP TV direction unacceptably showed replays of the accident as Marquez was taken via ambulance to the medical centre. He was reported as conscious, but no other news was reported as the race resumed.

Fortunately, Gresini chief Michele Masini provided a positive update via Sky Italia, saying that his rider was OK and would require checks at the hospital.

Masini said: “Alex is fine, the important thing is that he’s conscious. Then he’ll have to undergo some tests.”

Di Giannantonio sent his best wishes to Marquez immediately after the race. Joan Mir and Gresini teammate Fermin Aldeguer echoed the sentiments, with the two Spaniards completing the Catalan GP podium.

Everyone in the MotoGP paddock will be hoping that Marquez makes a swift recovery from his horrifying crash. The same will, of course, be said for Johann Zarco, who also suffered a catastrophic accident on the race restart.
