Ducati team boss Luigi Dall’Igna has stated that Marc Marquez did something ‘extraordinary’ before withdrawing from the French Grand Prix.

The Le Mans weekend was a tough pill to swallow for the Ducati factory team, with Marquez crashing out of the Sprint before Francesco Bagnaia failed to finish Sunday’s Grand Prix.

Marquez highsided during the Sprint, resulting in him suffering a fractured right foot. In addition, the 33-year-old revealed he was undergoing another surgery on his troublesome shoulder.

Marquez missed the rest of the Le Mans weekend and will not take part in the upcoming Catalan Grand Prix, with a return date currently unconfirmed.

Luigi Dall’Igna says Marc Marquez did something ‘extraordinary’ before French Grand Prix withdrawal

Taking to LinkedIn, Dall’Igna labelled Marquez’s record-breaking lap time of 1:29.288 from Q1 as ‘extraordinary’, especially when the Spaniard was hampered by his shoulder problem.

After what was a tough practice session, Marquez’s best was only good enough for P13, meaning he had to take part in Q1 for the first time this season.

Despite his troubles, Marquez broke the track record to seal a place in Q2 and ended up setting the second-quickest time of the session.

Dall’Igna wrote: “The disclosure of Marc’s upcoming shoulder surgery, which was not until now disclosed, and which was previously scheduled for after Barcelona.

“This further highlights his overwhelming talent, considering his performance so far, making his incredible new track record at Le Mans even more extraordinary. Simply outstanding.

“We have the regret of not having Marc with us at Montmelò, knowing we will be at a disadvantage. Be it as it may, we are already looking forward to seeing him back on track with us.

“We send our Champion the warmest wishes for a speedy and full recovery, with a big hug from the whole Team!”

Luigi Dall’Igna reveals Francesco Bagnaia ‘regret’ after French Grand Prix

Although it was a tough afternoon for Bagnaia, Dall’Igna was impressed with the Italian’s overall pace and effort.

Dall’Igna claimed that Bagnaia ‘had the pace’ to challenge the eventual winner, Jorge Martin, and displayed the ‘tenacity and class of his best days’.

He added: “We couldn’t have asked more of Pecco; he gave everything he had. He hadn’t started from pole since Malaysia but maintained a gruelling pace throughout the weekend.

“Pecco had the pace of the eventual winner, even during the GP, raced as a key protagonist, showing great feeling with the bike and displaying the tenacity and class of his best days.

“He fought hard for second place but, at times, looked capable of even taking the lead. This only increases the regret of not seeing him concluding his run among the top finishers.”
