Alex Marquez says Francesco Bagnaia’s crash hid Ducati’s real potential at French Grand Prix

Alex Marquez was frustrated with Ducati’s results from the French Grand Prix, feeling that the whole team deserved better.

Ducati didn’t have a good weekend at Le Mans, starting with the disastrous crash by Marc Marquez during the sprint.

Despite Francesco Bagnaia earning pole position in qualifying, his crash early in the French Grand Prix ensured neither Ducati factory team rider would finish a race for the second week in a row.

And things got worse for Ducati after Alex Marquez also crashed out of the French Grand Prix, marking a poor end to the weekend.

But Marquez believes Ducati had a much stronger showing than the results suggest, identifying Francesco Bagnaia in particular as a highlight for the team.

Alex Marque claims Francesco Bagnaia helped prove Aprilia weren’t ‘unbeatable’ at French Grand Prix

Speaking to DAZN after the race, Gresini rider Alex Marquez called on Ducati as a team to stay patient, admitting that their poor result doesn’t tell the full story.

He believes both Francesco Bagnaia and Fabio Di Giannantonio showed that Ducati have clawed their way back and neutralised Aprilia’s earlier dominance.

“We need to stay calm. I think Pecco could have been on the podium today; he at least had the pace to be on the podium, but he made that small mistake on lap three, which is very critical.

“So, it wasn’t the same Aprilia dominance as at the beginning of the year, but rather a different kind of dominance.

“I think both Pecco and Di Giannantonio had a good end to the race, so we weren’t that far behind, and these Aprilias weren’t the unbeatable ones we saw in the first three races of the year.”

Alex Marquez frustrated by ‘silly’ crash at Le Mans

Speaking further after the race, Marquez turned his focus to his own crash, and admitted that it was a stupid mistake on his part that led to him crashing out of the race.

“I went down a little bit, headfirst to the side, and that’s it. It’s those five seconds you have to figure out where you are, get your bearings again, but it was a really silly fall… And that’s it… I’m really angry because it was a stupid mistake.

Even before the race, Marquez didn’t get carried away with his win at Jerez last weekend, admitting that it was going to be a difficult outing for him in France.

A far from ideal outing for the Gresini rider, who will have the chance to redeem himself next weekend, as MotoGP returns to Spain for the Catalan Grand Prix.

With Marquez having already told Gresini his decision ahead of the 2027 season, the Spanish rider can turn his full focus on the remainder of this season.
