Marc Marquez admits his brother Alex Marquez is not ‘super, super talented’

The Marquez brothers set the premier class alight in 2025 with their unprecedented one-two finish in the riders’ standings.

Marc Marquez proved to be the superior rider in the family as he claimed his seventh MotoGP world title.

Still, Alex Marquez’s second-place finish in the riders’ championship mustn’t be understated. It was a breakout year for the 29-year-old, who claimed a dozen podiums that included his maiden victory in the category.

Alex now feels like he is no longer ‘invisible’ on the MotoGP grid. Often overlooked as the younger brother of the legendary Spaniard, the Gresini rider has now cemented himself as a serious title threat.

Marc Marquez admits Alex Marquez is not ‘super talented’, but identifies how he still makes a ‘difference’

During a MotoGP documentary that looks back at Marc’s 2025 title-winning campaign with the factory Ducati team, the Ant of Cervera touched upon the season-long rivalry that he shared with his brother.

Alex was only able to beat Marc to the chequered flag once on merit, leading the seven-time premier class title-winner to say, “Alex, maybe he’s not like a super, super talented rider, but he’s a real worker, and that makes a difference.”

It’s hard to argue with Marc’s verdict. While fairly blunt, it is also true, and takes nothing away from the fact that Alex completely deserves to be a rider on the MotoGP grid.

With Marc being regarded as one of the most aggressive riders that the premier class has ever seen, Alex, on the other hand, is more calculated and often has the bigger picture in mind when battling for position on the race track.

His hard work and determination away from race weekends are the leading factors for his recent success.

According to Marc’s assistant, the training that the Marquez brothers undertook together in 2025 made them ‘invincible’, and it has paid dividends in the 29-year-old’s career outlook.

Does Alex Marquez have the right mindset to be Marc Marquez’s teammate?

“The bad thing [about being Marc Marquez’s teammate] is the pressure and how the people who have you more in a magnifying glass look at you.”

Alex Marquez will be on equal factory machinery to Marc Marquez in the upcoming MotoGP season

With Ducati rewarding Alex’s best season yet in MotoGP with a factory bike in the upcoming term, both Marquez brothers will be racing atop equal machinery for the first time since their tenure together as teammates at Gresini in 2024.

The move may be making the elder sweat a little bit. Neil Hodgson predicts Alex to be Marc’s biggest threat to the championship during his title defence this year, which he will be hoping goes a lot better than his last one.

Only time will tell to see whether the Gresini star has it in him to provide a genuine challenge to his brother’s crown.

During their battles for track position in 2025, Alex seemed to have left a little bit on the table to save him and his brother from suffering a double DNF. With the prospect of winning a maiden premier class title in 2026, hopefully, he starts to get the elbows out.
