Why Jack Miller didn’t think he was ‘prepared’ enough before his 2015 MotoGP debut

Jack Miller had a lot of work to do when he arrived on the MotoGP scene after skipping Moto2 in 2015.

Clearly, the Aussie wasn’t prepared for life in the premier class and struggled throughout his first two seasons on a Honda bike as a result.

Miller eventually found his feet in 2017, which would be his last season with the Japanese manufacturer before joining Ducati.

He had already won his first race, courtesy of a crazy rain-soaked 2016 Dutch TT, giving him the confidence to kick on and grow into his MotoGP career.

Mick Doohan thinks people were wrong about Miller when he first joined the grid, and leapt to his defence before he had been through any pressing times.

Miller struggled in 2025 after being placed on a tricky Yamaha bike. In 2026, the outlook should improve with a new V4 engine.

Jack Miller didn’t ‘understand’ what was required of him before his 2015 MotoGP debut

Although Miller has competition for a 2027 seat, he is lucky enough to be on the grid this year, considering how much he struggled in 2025.

It has now been more than 10 years since he made his debut back in 2015, and it’s something that he went on to admit that he wasn’t ‘prepared’ for.

“Already last year (2016) I started to really understand what it took and what I needed to do in order to be a MotoGP rider. In the first year, [it] was hard,” he told TNT Sports in 2017.

“I don’t think I was ready, or I don’t think I was particularly prepared well enough myself. I didn’t really know what I was getting into, so I didn’t really know how to prepare for it.”

Going on to win multiple races and a factory Ducati deal would prove that he always had the tangibles to be successful.

He remains one of the most experienced riders on the grid and could be a very valuable asset for Yamaha moving forward.

How did Jack Miller perform during the 2015 MotoGP season?

Although Miller nearly left MotoGP in 2024, he refused to give up. He missed out on an opportunity to win the French Grand Prix in 2025 after falling off his bike in wet conditions. It could have been a sweet moment for him.

But casting an eye back to his earlier days, how did he find himself in a bit of a mess back in 2015? Points were tough to come by.

He only scored 17 of them throughout the campaign, with a best finish of 11th at the Catalan Grand Prix. The first half of his season was actually quite encouraging.

After the summer break, his performances weren’t as impressive and he only reached the top 15 on two more occasions.
