Mick Doohan said ‘a lot of people’ were wrong about Jack Miller when he first moved to MotoGP

Jack Miller had Mick Doohan in his corner ahead of his rookie season in MotoGP, but the five-time premier class world champion did have one warning for his compatriot.

Having spent time at four of the five constructors that are currently on the MotoGP grid, Jack Miller is one of the most experienced riders in the premier class paddock.

He started his career in the prototype category atop Honda machinery, the same as his hero and fellow Australian, Mick Doohan, but was unable to secure a ride in the factory team that was occupied by the formidable rider duo of Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa.

However, he would go on to receive factory support from Ducati and KTM later in his career, and enjoyed the most fruitful period of his career at Borgo Panigale.

The Australian has turned into one of the biggest fan favourites on the grid throughout his tenure in the premier class, but that wasn’t always the case.

What is Jack Miller’s best MotoGP race win?

Mick Doohan once highlighted what ‘a lot of people’ were saying about Jack Miller ahead of his MotoGP debut

During an interview with Adelaide Now in 2014, the five-time 500cc world champion was asked if he had any advice for his fellow Australian ahead of the step up to the premier class.

Doohan said, “There’s no advice I can really give him. The reason he’s in MotoGP is everything he’s done. I think he’s doing a great job.

“He’s young, and a lot of people are saying perhaps the jump straight from Moto3 to MotoGP isn’t the right thing. To me, he knows how to ride a bike, and he knows the circuits.

“So if there’s only one thing he has to understand, and that’s the bike.”

Despite the lack of advice that he had to give Miller, Doohan did have one warning for him ahead of his debut, adding, “The biggest thing he’ll have to worry about is containing his enthusiasm.

“If the bike’s not up to winning the race, [but] he feels comfortable on the bike believing he can win the race against the guy on a superior motorcycle – that’s the only thing that can do his confidence in, if he’s crashing a little bit too often trying to over-ride the machine.”

Jack Miller is the latest rider to join the list of Australian MotoGP legends

Despite not clinching a world title in Grand Prix motorcycle racing just yet, Miller has been the flag-bearer for Australia since making his debut in the premier class.

In 2022, Miller had a corner at the legendary Phillip Island circuit renamed in his honour, joining Wayne Gardner, Casey Stoner and Doohan as the latest Australian two-wheeled star to be officially recognised.

Like Doohan, Stoner was also an integral part of Miller’s MotoGP career, with the two-time MotoGP world champion being cited as the reason why the 30-year-old became interested in Grand Prix motorcycle racing in the first place.

The current up-and-coming rider for those Down Under to back is Senna Agius, who currently competes in Moto2.

In the midst of the 2025 season, Agius expressed his desire to replicate Stoner and Miller by winning a Grand Prix at the Victoria-based circuit.

He went on to achieve that later in the season, winning the Moto2 Australian Grand Prix in October.
