Marc Marquez disagrees with brother Alex about achieving another one-two in 2026 MotoGP championship

Marc Marquez and Alex Marquez made history in the 2025 MotoGP season after they became the first brothers to ever achieve a one-two in a premier class championship.

The Spaniards dominated the field this year, and they even locked out the top two positions in the riders’ championship with rounds to spare. Marc Marquez won the 2025 MotoGP title in Japan with five rounds still to go, and Alex Marquez sealed second with two rounds spare.

Alex is also the only rider who can finish the 2025 MotoGP season within 192 points of Marc atop the tree, despite the latter missing the last four rounds. Ducati have been without their star since Marc Marquez suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in Indonesia this October.

Marc doubts another Marquez one-two in 2026 but Alex can improve, even if he disagrees

Marc left Mandalika with a 183-point lead over Alex at the top of the table, with 545 points over his younger sibling’s 362. Alex has reduced his deficit to 88 points during his brother’s injury-enforced absence, with one race of 2025 still remaining with the Valencia Grand Prix.

But Marc never expected Alex to achieve what he has this year, as he believes it is “unlikely” the Marquez brothers will ever secure another championship one-two. But Marc does not rule out a repeat in 2026, as, even if his younger brother would disagree, Alex can improve.

“Looking back now, I wasn’t that conservative with my 2025 prediction,” Marc explained to DAZN. “But I wasn’t that risky, either. The world championship is not on the list.

“I’d change it now, because I’d put my brother in, too. But I couldn’t be that optimistic, as it had never happened before in history. Alex has been outstanding.”

Marc continued: “I underestimated it. But predicting Alex’s runner-up finish was unrealistic, because it’s unlikely to happen again. There is room for improvement. If you talk to him, he will tell you the opposite. But we will see what happens in 2026.”

Alex Marquez was the only rider to regularly challenge Marc Marquez during 2025

No rider has come close to Marc Marquez this year, as the 32-year-old secured 11 wins and 15 podiums from the 18 Grands Prix that he entered, along with scoring 14 Sprint wins. But Gresini rider Alex Marquez on a Ducati GP24 was his brother’s biggest foe before his injury.

Alex Marquez won the Valencia Sprint this Saturday for his third Sprint win of 2025, having also won the Sprints at Silverstone and Portimao. The 29-year-old has also registered three Grand Prix wins and 12 podiums through the first 21 rounds ahead of Sunday’s Valencia GP.

Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi and Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia are the only other riders to secure multiple Grand Prix wins in 2025 with two each. Yet they head into Sunday’s season-closing Valencia GP only third and fifth in the standings, with deficits of 129 and 169 points to Alex.

Pundits like Neil Hodgson now predict that Alex Marquez will be Marc Marquez’s main title rival in 2026, as well. Alex will have the same factory-spec Ducati in 2026 as Marc, Bagnaia and VR46 rider Fabio Di Giannantonio as a reward for his stellar efforts on a GP24 in 2025.
