What Marc Marquez’s father told Alex Marquez about his brother ‘always’ winning after reaching MotoGP

Alex Marquez might now have an opportunity to win some more MotoGP races before the end of the season.

After Marc Marquez’s unfortunate crash at the Indonesian Grand Prix, where he sustained damage to his collarbone, it looks as though he could miss some time. If ligament problems are confirmed and surgery is required, his 2025 campaign may be over already.

After spending much of the year in his shadow, the younger Marquez brother, who sits second in the MotoGP standings, has to be the favourite to succeed in his place. In Mandalika, he was Ducati’s second-quickest rider after Marc bowed out of the race.

Marquez accepted Marco Bezzecchi’s apology for crashing into him in Mandalika. The impact sent him flying through the gravel and left Alex with ‘strong words’ for the gravel. He feels as though a change needs to be made to make things safer for riders at the circuit if they enter the run-off areas.

Marc Marquez’s father told Alex Marquez to be ‘happy’ to finish behind his brother

Marquez’s crash can be ‘career-ending at times’ due to the sensitive nature of the ligaments in any shoulder region. If severe damage has been done, he might even face a race against time to prepare himself for the start of 2026.

He flew back to Madrid for further medical assessments after Sunday’s race in Mandalika, but with just over a week before needing to head to Australia for the next race in Phillip Island, a return so soon feels unlikely at this stage.

With Alex now the favourite to win races for Ducati, it’s worth noting what his father, Julia, told Diario AS about him finishing behind Marc. He told him to be ‘happy’ with such an honour.

“Yes, because Álex one day told me, lamenting that he was always second, and I told him if he didn’t see that being the first of the earthlings was very good, because the one who goes first is an alien and is lucky that he is his brother,” he said.

“One day I just said that I had to be happy because the first of the human world championship. I told him when I had been done for four or five seconds.”

Why Alex Marquez now has more pressure on his shoulders in 2025

With his brother out of the picture and Francesco Bagnaia performing inconsistently at Ducati, Alex will be expected to step up.

He managed a podium in Mandalika, despite not having enough pace for one across the weekend. Both attrition and patience were virtues for him.

With second place still on the line heading into the final five events of 2025, one good weekend should end all the fuss for Alex.

Doing it without Marc on the other side of the world won’t be easy, though. If he does step up and perform well, he’ll be putting a good foot forward for a 2027 factory Ducati seat.
