Marc Marquez warned how his Indonesian Grand Prix crash could be ‘career-ending at times’

Marc Marquez has sustained further injuries to his right arm after a horrible crash with Marco Bezzecchi at the Indonesian Grand Prix.

The Ant of Cervera has never finished a race at Mandalika, and that streak continued in 2025. It has been an off weekend for Marquez, having crashed twice in practice and qualifying on the third row of the grid.

The Ducati rider, who wrapped up the 2025 title at Motegi last weekend, came home to finish sixth in the Sprint at the Indonesian Grand Prix. Marquez was hit with a long-lap penalty for a collision with Alex Rins at turn 10.

Marco Bezzecchi won the Sprint from pole position after recovering from a slow start. He had another poor getaway on Sunday, before he collided with Marquez on lap two.

Bezzecchi rode into the back of Marquez’s GP25 at turn seven, sending the pair barrelling into the gravel trap. The latter landed on top of his right arm, which he was seen holding as he stood up from the crash.

Speaking to Spanish TV in the paddock, Marquez felt that he had torn the ligaments in his right collarbone. Michael Laverty has warned that this is ‘worse than a break’ and that it could be a career-ending issue.

He said via TNT Sports 2 (05/10, 8:58 am): “That’s worse than a break. If you break a collarbone, then it’s screws or plates, and then it’s the wound that takes longer.

“But whenever you damage the ligaments, that could be a lengthy process, especially if they need [to be] reattached, that could be career-ending at times. We don’t want to go down that route, fingers crossed.

“But he’s been through so much that, that is certainly not deserved today. One week on from making history, it just shows the cruel nature of the beast of this motorsport that we love.”

Who will replace Marc Marquez at Ducati if he does not return in 2025?

Marquez is flying back to Madrid to undergo further checks. He requires a CT scan to see if he needs surgery for his collarbone.

With the championship already wrapped up, Marquez is in no position to rush his recovery. He can properly focus on getting back up to full fitness, which could take until the start of the next season.

Davide Tardozzi told Marquez to focus on 2026 in Sepang during winter testing. With his accident at Mandalika, his focus will now be on recovering and ensuring that he is fit enough for the start of next year.

If Marquez is unable to return for the final four races of 2025, Ducati will likely call upon reserve rider Michele Pirro to stand in. The Italian has been with the Borgo Panigale outfit since 2013.
