Marc Marquez sustained a fracture to his collarbone after a brutal crash on the opening lap of the Indonesian Grand Prix.
The new MotoGP champion wasn’t at fault for a clash with Marco Bezzecchi, which saw the Italian rider overestimate the speed of his rival ahead. With nowhere to go, the Aprilia rider went straight into the back of Marquez, sending them both flying into the gravel.
Unfortunately, it was a dismal day for Ducati, as Francesco Bagnaia also retired from the race while struggling in last place. The Indonesian Grand Prix was one to forget, and might spell the end of the season for one of their riders, with four rounds to go. It all depends on how much damage has been done.
MotoGP fans want Bezzecchi penalised for his role in the incident. Unfortunately, his speed was his downfall, and being impressive at turn seven actually ended up hurting him. It blew the race wide open and allowed Fermin Aldeguer to take a maiden win in dominant style.

With Marc admitting that he feels as if the ligaments around his collarbone have been damaged, he could be in for a long recovery once more. If he requires surgery, there’s a strong chance that he will not return to competitive action this year.
Marquez has already had a career-saving operation before, and now faces a fight to prepare himself for the start of the 2026 campaign. What might end up hurting him most is that this crash was through no fault of his own.
Brother Alex has complained that the gravel trap might have put Marc in more danger, and believes it is something that should change. He wants ‘something’ to be done about it, according to Gavin Emmett, who was listening to him before the podium celebrations in Mandalika.
“There has been all sorts going on behind the podium,” he said on TNT Sports. “Just heard Alex Marquez railing. He has watched the crash back of his brother, at the gravel, and he was grieved with Acosta.
“He said the gravel is not right, it’s a bit like Jerez, here, and a bit grabby, basically. He actually used the swear word, but it’s rubbish, the gravel.
“It’s not until something happens, they’re going to do something about it. Quite some strong words, behind the podium, just having watched his brother’s crash back.”

With Marc potentially out for the season and Bagnaia really struggling, there are going to be some opportunities for riders up and down the grid in the coming weeks.
Pedro Acosta feels close to a breakthrough first win, while Marco Bezzecchi wants to break into the top three in the standings and hold onto it.
The younger Marquez brother is probably now the favourite in Philip Island, but the DAZN cameras captured exactly what he said after the race, and posted it on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“I’m scared, mate,” he said. “I saw him fly. The gravel is a b—– mess. Nothing gets done until something happens.”
