Marc Marquez could be set for an extended spell on the sidelines after sustaining a collarbone injury at the Indonesian Grand Prix.
The Spaniard was taken out through no fault of his own on lap one of the race, as Marco Bezzecchi misjudged his speed through turn seven. It left both tumbling through the gravel, with the Ducati star coming off a little worse and limping away from the scene of the accident.
Marquez has flown back to Madrid for a medical assessment, but he fears ligament damage, which usually takes longer to heal than a break. Fortunately, he had a seventh MotoGP title wrapped up in advance of the Indonesian Grand Prix, otherwise, he might have been in a rush to make a return.
Bezzecchi made a ‘strange decision’ before hitting Marquez and tried to pass him at a place where no rider usually attempts any move. Marquez’s crash is ‘career-ending at times’ and serves as a reminder of the dangers motorcycle racing can pose. No one is invincible.

Marc Marquez told to avoid ‘biggest mistake’ and rush his MotoGP return from injury
Fans felt Bezzecchi should be penalised for his actions in Mandalika, which could have big implications in the fight for victory during the last four rounds of the season. If the Italian rider is available to ride at Phillip Island, he will be considered one of the favourites without Marc there.
Marquez accepted Bezzecchi was ‘very fast’ and his apology after the race. He knows that it wasn’t something he was trying to do on purpose, and more that the Aprilia rider panicked while making his move. That’s how racing goes.
However, journalist Mat Oxley has now warned Marquez not to repeat the ‘biggest mistake’ of his career by rushing a comeback from his injuries. He thinks he should take some time to recover properly and avoid further damage.
“You can taken out at any time and get hurt,” he said. “He must be, number one, p—– — that he’s hurt, and number two, a much bigger emotion. Just so thankful that he has tucked it away, and he’s already champion.
“His biggest mistake of his career was coming back too quickly after he broke his arm at Jerez. You just don’t know, I hope, especially because it’s that part of his body. His right upper arm, shoulder, collarbone that is where he is weakest, so he really, really needs to think about it very carefully before rushing back.”
When is the last time Marc Marquez missed a MotoGP race with an injury
Despite there being no confirmation yet, there is a strong likelihood that Marquez will be missing next weekend’s Australian Grand Prix.
There are roughly seven days to go before he would need to fly out, and his collarbone is not going to magically heal that quickly.
The last race he missed through injury was the 2023 Dutch TT, which he missed as a result of a complicated rib fracture.
It means the 32-year-old went nearly two and a half years without an absence, but now will sit on the sidelines for a while as his body recovers from a big roll through the gravel.
