Luca Marini explains why Ducati have dominated MotoGP for years and gives his Luigi Dall’Igna verdict

Ducati have been the dominant force of MotoGP in the 2020s, and Honda rider Luca Marini has highlighted the main reason why their premier class rivals have struggled to catch up.

Ducati secured their sixth successive constructors’ championship at the Catalan Grand Prix earlier this season to continue their perfect record since the start of the new decade.

The combination of the high-flying Borgo Panigale-based outfit and six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez has proved to be too much in the current campaign, where the Ducati dominance has continued to prevail.

Incredibly, a Ducati bike has won 29 of the 32 races this season, with Marquez standing on the top step of the podium on 25 of those occasions.

In a testament to their dominance, Ducati’s biggest concern is making MotoGP look ‘easy’. The team feel like they risk becoming unpopular if they continue to make a mockery of their premier class rivals.

Luigi Dall’Igna is ‘never satisfied’ according to former Ducati rider Luca Marini

Luca Marini spent the first few years of his premier class career within the Ducati stable as part of Valentino Rossi’s VR46 Racing outfit before moving to the factory Honda team ahead of the 2024 season.

In a recent interview with Moto.it, the Italian rider was asked about his relationship with the mastermind behind Ducati’s superiority, Luigi Dall’Igna.

“Excellent, excellent,” Marini replied. “I’ve always had a great relationship with Gigi, and I still do. He’s a knowledgeable person, someone who can teach you a lot.

“He really knows every detail of the bike, and he was always very attentive to every feedback, every piece of information you tried to give him, to then improve the bike.

“I’ve always liked that about Gigi: he’s never satisfied, he’s always trying to improve, and despite all the victories he’s always brought home and achieved great things, it’s never enough.

“Ultimately, this is always the case in sport: you always have to try to improve.”

Dall’Igna has been wowed by the exploits of Marquez on the current spec GP25 that he designed. Hailing the Ant of Cervera, the Italian engineer claims that he has never seen anyone have such a ‘stellar season’ to the calibre of what Marquez is achieving with the factory Ducati team in 2025.

Luigi Dall’Igna still needs to resolve the Francesco Bagnaia issues that have been prevalent in 2025

Despite Marquez achieving unprecedented things in his maiden season with the factory Ducati outfit, the rider in the neighbouring garage has left a lot to be desired.

Off the back of three consecutive seasons where he has challenged for a title, Francesco Bagnaia has struggled immensely in trying to replicate the feats of his Spanish counterpart.

Dall’Igna is losing patience with Bagnaia, with the 28-year-old needing a serious uptick in results if he wants to continue racing in red following the expiration of his Ducati contract at the end of 2026.

However, there seems to be some sort of stand-off between the two figures. Dall’Igna is adamant that the GP25 is not much different to its predecessor, the GP24.

On the other hand, Bagnaia believes the GP25 is the biggest shift in a Ducati bike since his arrival at the team in 2019.

In any case, the two-time world champion is aware of his struggles and is attempting to rectify them as soon as he possibly can. Only time will tell if he proves to be successful or not.
