Jorge Lorenzo noticed something ‘quite conservative’ from Marc Marquez in Barcelona battle with Alex Marquez

Alex Marquez returned to the top step of the podium at the Catalan Grand Prix after beating his championship-leading brother, Marc Marquez, to the chequered flag in another one-two finish for the Marquez family.

Alex dominantly took pole position in Catalonia before handing Marc the victory in the Sprint race after crashing out on his own at turn 10.

However, the Grand Prix was a different story. Marc took an early lead, but Alex’s pace at the circuit was matchless as the younger Marquez brother went on to re-take the lead in the opening laps.

The Gresini rider learned from his mistakes in the race from the day prior, and earned himself his second victory of the season following his feat at the Spanish Grand Prix in April.

It was a dominant performance from a different Marquez that we are used to seeing throw the gauntlet down. Marc later said that he feels like Alex would be appreciated more if he didn’t carry the ‘burden’ of being his little brother.

Jorge Lorenzo noticed that Marc Marquez wasn’t his usual ‘aggressive’ self in trying to re-take the lead

Speaking to DAZN following the conclusion of the race, two-time MotoGP champion and former teammate of Marc’s at Honda, Jorge Lorenzo, noted a change in racing style that the factory Ducati rider had in his attempts to re-take the lead from his younger brother.

“He wasn’t super aggressive in his counterattack attempt,” Lorenzo said. “He was quite conservative in the chicane. Marc, in order to try to win on this track, which wasn’t so favourable for him, had to take a lot more risks.”

The factory Ducati rider had a hairy moment at turn 10 during the race, where he could have replicated his brother’s race-ending crash from the day before.

Marquez noted that he knew he should give up the fight for the lead at this very moment, settling for second to aid his championship challenge.

Ducati boss Davide Tardozzi also predicted Marc’s streak coming to an end in Barcelona after seeing how quick Alex was during Friday’s practice sessions and qualifying on Saturday.

The lack of a move from Marc’s side during the race is a big change to Marc’s riding style. The Spaniard is known for his aggressive riding style and throwing the bike into corners as he tries to gain an advantage over his rivals.

Previously, Neil Hodgson called Marc the ‘most aggressive’ rider he has ever seen in the sport after the conclusion of the 2015 MotoGP season which saw Lorenzo beat Valentino Rossi to the title.

As well as being the most aggressive, Marc has also been labelled as the toughest rider by one of his current rivals, Pedro Acosta.

The Murcian native is inspired by Marquez’s ability to bounce back from the horrific injuries that have plagued his career in recent years and mount another championship challenge with a completely different team.
