Marc Marquez’s incredible winning streak in 2025 finally came to an end at the Catalan Grand Prix as brother Alex Marquez claimed victory.

The 32-year-old came into his home Grand Prix off the back of 14 consecutive wins, including Sprints. With it being possible for him to win the title at Misano if results went his way, Marquez was determined to have a strong weekend at Montmelo.

The Ducati rider managed third in qualifying as Alex Marquez claimed his first pole position of the season. The Gresini rider pulled out a stunning lap as he gained three tenths of a second in the last sector alone.

Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo split the Marquez brothers in second, but he could not hold off Marc Marquez as he looked to challenge Alex in the Sprint. The 29-year-old looked to be in control until he crashed out at turn 10 with four laps to go, handing the win to his brother.

Marc Marquez looked to make it 16 wins in a row on Sunday as he took the lead into the first corner. However, Alex Marquez regained control of the Catalan Grand Prix in the early stages and kept his GP24 on the track to redeem himself with victory.

Marc Marquez ‘gave up’ fighting Alex Marquez after making a mistake at turn seven at the Catalan Grand Prix

His brother kept pace behind him and looked to make a move, but the Ducati rider could not find a way past. Speaking after the race via TNT Sports 2 (07/09, 2:41 pm), Marc Marquez said he had to ‘accept’ that he was beaten, admitting that he ‘gave up’ after making a mistake at turn seven.

“My strategy today was try to find the maximum and the maximum was, first of all, open the gap with the third guy,” he said.

“And then try to beat him in the last laps is what I tried, it’s exactly what I tried. I tried to lead that first two laps and then he overtook me. And I just was behind him [for] all the race.

“And when I tried to attack, I just did a mistake on turn seven and then I went wide. And on that point, I gave up. I tried again, but I saw that I was on the limit [on] everything.

“I’m happy, because it was time to accept that somebody was faster than us. Already yesterday, but he made a mistake, but today, he was riding in a perfect way.”

Marc Marquez cannot win the 2025 MotoGP title at Misano after losing the Catalan Grand Prix

The Catalan GP is the first race since Silverstone where Marc Marquez has been beaten. He is still in a comfortable position for the championship with a 175-point lead over his brother.

However, he will have to wait a little longer to seal the deal. Alex Marquez’s win at Montmelo means that he cannot win the championship at Misano next weekend.

Marc Marquez did not want to have ‘match point’ at Misano as it would mean that his brother had a poor weekend on home soil. He got his wish with Alex’s victory, leaving him waiting until Japan to potentially grab his seventh premier class title.

The Catalan GP proved that the 32-year-old can be beaten in 2025. But the Spaniard will inevitably claim the championship – it is just a question of when.
