Aprilia’s Jorge Martin still can’t emulate one thing Marco Bezzecchi has ‘achieved’ after his return

Jorge Martin enjoyed a positive return from injury at the 2025 Czech Grand Prix, but the Spaniard realised he must improve to match Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi.

Brno welcomed MotoGP back for the first time since 2020 last weekend, as Aprilia even saw Martin get back on the RS-GP25 for the first time in 95 days. The 27-year-old had not raced for the Noale crew since April’s Qatar Grand Prix while he recovered from his severe injuries.

Martin broke 11 ribs and sustained a hemopneumothorax at Lusail, which ruled the reigning champion out for seven rounds of the 2025 MotoGP season. But the Madrid native was able to return before the summer break and he would produce a strong showing at the Czech GP.

Despite his lengthy stint on the sidelines, Martin qualified P12 for the Czech GP on his return from injury as Aprilia teammate Bezzecchi secured P4 with a lap time 0.970 seconds quicker. The Aprilia riders also secured P11 and P4 during the Sprint plus P7 and P2 in the Grand Prix.

Martin ignored Aprilia’s advice to take it easy prior to qualifying for the Czech GP, as the 32-time podium finisher nearly crashed late in Q2 after he dipped a wheel in the grass. Aprilia’s tyre management surprised Martin at Brno, too, as he expected to suffer more degradation.

But Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Martin’s return from injury also made him realise that the Spaniard ‘needs to work’ on lateral load, having seen how strong Bezzecchi was at Brno. Martin could not emulate the riding efficiency that Bezzecchi has ‘achieved’ after 12 rounds.

Like Martin, who left Pramac for Aprilia this year, Bezzecchi joined before the 2025 MotoGP season to likewise swap from riding a Ducati at VR46. The 26-year-old is now further along with his adaptation to the RS-GP25 and sealed his third Grand Prix podium of 2025 at Brno.

Bezzecchi produced an up-and-down start to his time with Aprilia, having failed to secure a top-five finish through his first six Grand Prix appearances for the Noale factory. But his last six starts have seen Bezzecchi win the British Grand Prix, and claim P2 at Assen and at Brno.

The Italian also secured P2 in the Sprint Race at the Sachsenring and P3 in the Assen Sprint. Martin’s P11 in the Brno Sprint and P7 in the Czech GP mark his best finishes with Aprilia so far, having only achieved P16 in the Lusail Sprint before his costly crash during the Qatar GP.

Aprilia and Martin will now hope he can use the summer break to prepare for a strong run to the end of the season, through which he will try to emulate Bezzecchi’s efficiency on the RS-GP25. Marc Marquez expects Martin will fight for race wins in 2025 after the break, too.
