Alex Marquez can see the ‘similarity’ with one MotoGP world champion as he takes top spot from Marc Marquez

Alex Marquez is in the rather shocking position of MotoGP championship leader for the second time this season after winning his first race.

The Spaniard claimed a well-deserved victory in the Grand Prix of Spain, after brother Marc spun into the gravel and opened a door for him to take advantage of.

After overtaking Fabio Quartararo, Marquez sailed into the distance and never looked back. No one could match his pace at Jerez.

Despite working on a one-year-old Ducati bike at Gresini, he is still managing to churn out some impressive lap times and consistency.

Marquez crashed at the Spanish Grand Prix on two occasions, before bouncing back and showing that although his body may have taken a beating, his confidence hadn’t.

Marc thinks Ducati could change their mind about Alex if he continues to perform, with the potential for extra benefits off the back of his performances.

Alex Marquez sees a ‘little similarity’ between himself and Jorge Martin

Last year, the factory Ducati riders were beaten to the title by a satellite rider, as Jorge Martin remained consistent enough to triumph on the Pramac by 10 points.

This season, they brought in a six-time champion to help cover for that eventuality and may have been caught out by the surprise challenge of his brother instead on older machinery.

Speaking to the Spanish edition of Motorsport.com, Marquez discussed the potential similarities between a title charge from himself and last year’s from Martin.

“Martín not only won for the management, he has a very great internal speed, he was very fast, he has an innate talent that in many moments made him win,” he said.

“The balance of finishing races and adding, with Marc on the track is enough to win the title. I can see a little similarity with Martín, but it’s not the same because he had an official motorcycle with all the improvements.

“With what we have, race by race without overwhelming us, we don’t have the pressure, the officials have it, we have to be there taking advantage of the opportunity.”

Will Alex Marquez be able to maintain a MotoGP title charge in 2025?

The positive thing about Ducati potentially handing Marquez additions to his bike down the line is that it will support his title charge.

He won’t be able to rely on mistakes from his brother all year, who has lost nearly 50 points in two races from critical errors in 40% of the events held so far.

The GP24 is a solid baseline, but there’s always the potential to add more speed. Without it, it’s hard to see Alex being able to match Marc, especially towards the end of the campaign.

For now, he appears to have Francesco Bagnaia in his pocket, and he might even be turning some heads at the factory team. Could he be their rider for the future?
