Marc Marquez wasn’t in Barcelona for the Catalan Grand Prix, where his brother Alex Marquez suffered a brutal crash.
Marquez was recovering from surgery and missed the Catalan Grand Prix, so he was sitting at home for the race. Understandably, Marc was terrified seeing Alex Marquez’s crash at Montmelo.
Despite his crash, MotoGP restarted the race after two red flag situations, a move that earned them a lot of criticism at the time.
Was it right to restart the Catalan GP after two big accidents?
Despite MotoGP officials insisting that it was safe to resume the race, there were some riders who definitely didn’t want to go back out onto the track.
And had Marc Marquez been at the Catalan Grand Prix, he also wouldn’t have been able to resume the race after seeing his brother’s terrifying crash.

Marc Marquez believes he wouldn’t have been able to continue after seeing Alex Marquez’s Catalan GP crash
Speaking to YouTube creator Gawl Bike at a recent sponsor event, Marc Marquez was asked how he would have reacted to Alex Marquez’s crash if he were riding at the Catalan Grand Prix.
Unsurprisingly, Marquez said that seeing his brother would have kept him from racing, pointing to Alex’s crash at the Dutch Grand Prix last weekend as further evidence.
“It’s difficult. It’s happened to me, and it’s happened to him. I remember the Catalan Grand Prix last year in the sprint. He was leading, and I was second, and he fell. In the end, you have to finish it, but obviously, you don’t want it to fall apart.
“For example, in Holland this past weekend, I went by and saw him lying there on the gravel. I didn’t know how he was. It sucks for everyone to see him there. That’s very difficult. Luckily, I wasn’t competing in the Catalan Grand Prix this year when he had that serious accident.
“I think 95% I wouldn’t have been able to go out and resume racing. I wouldn’t have been mentally prepared because I didn’t know how my brother was, and in the end, health comes first and then racing.”

Marc Marquez explains how MotoGP union could have prevented Catalan GP controversy
Speaking further in the interview, Marquez said that the race resuming at the Catalan Grand Prix is a perfect example of how useful a union for MotoGP riders can be.
“There is no union, and there is no unity among the riders. Sometimes, one is selfish, and many times, when something serious happens, and it is hard to say something, one rider will raise their hand and say, ‘I’m not riding.’
“But the one who does well on the circuit and can see the chance to score points will say that they can. So either we all pull together, or we don’t. But for the moment, that’s impossible because there is no union. It has been attempted, but it does not exist.
“But well, in the end, I’ve learned over the years that I make my decisions, and that’s it, right? And if I decide not to ride, then I won’t ride.
“If they decide not to ride for a reason, then there won’t be a race. But let’s hope we don’t have to go through that situation, because that will mean that something serious has happened, and nobody ever wants that.”
The idea of a union or a group committed to the safety of the riders is something that Marquez has been pushing for behind the scenes for a long time.
It was recently revealed that MotoGP shut down Marquez’s idea for a safety union years ago, not wanting to let the riders collectivise in any capacity.
