Davide Tardozzi ‘astonished’ by Marc Marquez’s Brno performance after what doctors told him

Davide Tardozzi says Marc Marquez’s victory at the Czech Grand Prix is a testament to his ‘mentality’, even more so than his talent.

Marquez won the race at Brno from fourth, passing Fabio Di Giannantonio, Ai Ogura and teammate Francesco Bagnaia en route to victory.

The Spaniard missed the French and Catalan GPs in May after undergoing surgery on his shoulder and his foot, but he has now won back-to-back races to transform his title prospects.

Davide Tardozzi: Marc Marquez not supposed to be fully fit until September

Speaking to TNT Sports after the race (14:06, 21/06), Tardozzi said Marquez won’t be fully fit until September, based on what doctors have told him. While the screw that was pressing on his radial nerve has now been re-aligned, he needs time to rebuild muscle.

Going by that timeline, Marquez’s recovery will continue during the Assen, Sachsenring, Silverstone and Aragon weekends.

But already in this ‘training’ phase, he is defying the expectations of his doctors and his colleagues.

Marquez said he felt ’empty’ after ‘suffering’ in the final third of the race, but he was still able to hold off Ai Ogura.

“I still say that, until the summer, those races will be training for Marc,” said Tardozzi.

“We definitely know that on the right-hand, he still suffers a bit from his right arm. I think we will need two more months.

“The muscles on the shoulder are still not 100%. The doctors told us that it will be September at least [before he] recovers the situation.

“Even with one and a half arms, he’s very fast.

“I know exactly what the situation is, I know exactly what the doctors told me two weeks ago and a few days ago. Honestly, I’m astonished, because he’s doing more than what we expect and what doctors expect.

“It’s not only talent, it’s mentality. The body gives him a limitation, but the mentality of this guy… I never saw in the 40 years that I am in this world.”

Earlier in the weekend, Tardozzi predicted that Marquez would never return to his pre-2020 level based on his conversations with doctors. But if he can maintain the form he showed at Brno, he may be able to win the title regardless.
