Iker Lecuona has admitted that thinking about a return to MotoGP would be a ‘mistake’ despite his strong showing at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Earlier in the month, Lecuona was drafted in by Gresini as Alex Marquez’s replacement for the Hungarian Grand Prix at Balaton Park.

Marquez was still recovering from his huge crash at the Catalan Grand Prix, with Lecuona stepping in to ride for Gresini alongside Fermin Aldeguer.

Despite being away from MotoGP for some time, Lecuona produced a fine display as he finished seventh, with Marc Marquez winning the race.

Looking ahead, Lecuona will resume his WorldSBK duties, where he is stuck behind Nicolo Bulega.

Iker Lecuona says it would be a ‘mistake’ to think about MotoGP return

Speaking recently to Speedweek, Lecuona was asked about a potential full-time return to MotoGP following his strong outing at Balaton Park.

In response, the Spaniard refused to shut the door, but did admit that it would be a ‘mistake’ to think about the premier class at this moment.

Lecuona explained: “I’ll never say it’s impossible! I learned that as a child. When I was a kid, I often told my father that something was impossible – for example, during training.

“He would always tell me, ‘Nothing is impossible!’ After a few attempts, I always managed it. So, even as a child, I banished the word ‘impossible’ from my vocabulary.

“I’m not currently focusing on MotoGP, and I’m very happy in the Superbike World Championship. I’m relaxed and have an incredible team with a very good bike.

“Thinking about MotoGP now would be a mistake. I don’t want to say that I don’t want to go there, or that I want to stay here for my entire career. If the opportunity arises, I would weigh the pros and cons.

“Then I would decide with my manager, with whom I have a very good relationship, whether I return to MotoGP or stay here. At the moment, I’m not thinking about it, but never say never.”

Speaking to Speedweek following the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lecuona branded it a ‘nice comeback’.

The 26-year-old also stated that if he had to score his performance, it would be a 10 out of 10.

Lecuona said: “It was a nice comeback in seventh place. “I’m absolutely delighted with my race. I had to take a wider line more often than I expected. This cost me a lot of time before I caught and overtook Miller.

“After that, I saw Moreira and wanted to get him, but it didn’t work out. I’m very grateful for this fantastic opportunity. I was able to show my speed and my potential. I give myself a 10 out of 10.”
