KTM could force Enea Bastianini to stay for another year despite Gresini agreement

KTM are able to block Enea Bastianini’s proposed move to Gresini even though the rider’s contract is technically up at the end of the year, according to a report.

It’s rumoured that Bastianini will move to Gresini for 2027, returning to a Ducati motorcycle after a two-year stint on the KTM at Tech3. Rising Moto2 star Dani Holgado is expected to be his teammate.

Bastianini, who lost his factory Ducati seat to Marc Marquez, finished 14th in last year’s championship. But for Maverick Vinales’ injury problems, he likely would have been the lowest-ranking KTM rider.

Fermin Aldeguer and Alex Marquez are both expected to leave Gresini – Which riders should they sign to replace them in 2027?

KTM could block Enea Bastianini’s move to Gresini

Despite his inconsistent form on the RC16, KTM may stand in the way of Bastianini’s exit. According to Motorpasion Moto, he needs permission from the Mattighofen bosses before he can sign his Gresini deal.

While Bastianini only signed for two years, KTM inserted a clause allowing them to ‘unilaterally’ extend it to the end of 2027. They don’t need to consult him before triggering the option.

KTM haven’t decided whether to activate it, so Bastianini is being made to wait. It could be argued that there is little sense in keeping a rider who is determined to leave.

Perhaps there is a scenario where KTM extend the deal and then demand compensation from Gresini to release Bastianini, though that would be a controversial move.

What happens to Enea Bastianini if Tech3 split with KTM?

As if to further complicate matters, reports suggest Tech3 are close to a deal with Honda. The existing agreements between manufacturers and satellite teams expire at the end of the year.

If the deal goes through, then KTM could be left with just two bikes on the 2027 grid. Alex Marquez is replacing Pedro Acosta but they are undecided on his teammate.

Vinales was in line for a KTM factory seat but his ongoing fitness issues – he missed the United States GP and underwent a fresh procedure – have put the move in doubt.

Bastianini has shown top form in flashes, not least in Austin where he scored a Sprint podium and finished sixth in the Grand Prix. If he can deliver that kind of pace consistently, he too could become a KTM factory contender, whether he wants to or not.
