Mark Webber was among those to congratulate Senna Agius after the Moto2 rider took victory at the United States GP on Sunday.

Agius qualified fifth at the Circuit of the Americas but the race descended into chaos immediately as a seven-rider crash brought out the red flag. The event was subsequently shortened to 10 laps.

Agius then fought Celestino Vietti for the win and made the decisive overtake with two laps remaining. It’s just his third victory in the classes after his wins at Silverstone and Phillip Island last year.

Mick Doohan says Senna Agius is going from “strength to strength” in Moto2 🇦🇺 Do you think we’ll see him on the 2027 MotoGP grid?

Mark Webber salutes ‘mega’ Senna Agius on Austin win

“More than a win,” Agius wrote on Instagram, accompanied by an image of him pointing to the heavens. “A dedication.”

The win came only a fortnight after the death of Roberto Lunadei, one of Agius’ mechanics at the Intact team.

Webber, a legendary Australian Formula 1 driver, sent a message to Agius in the comments, writing: “Mega mate.”

British Superbikes champion Kyle Ryde added: “Mega ride mate, well done.”

Agius couldn’t celebrate with a traditional shoey on the podium because he’s still only 20 years old, and the legal drinking age in the US is 21.

“Must still be a baby,” he joked in his post.

What’s the latest on Senna Agius’ 2027 MotoGP chances?

After a top 10 finish in last year’s Moto2 standings, Agius knows that another step forward will put him in the frame for a MotoGP seat.

He hadn’t scored a point in 2026 before his Austin win, which has parachuted him up to sixth in the standings. Journalist Neil Morrison has spoken to the rider’s manager, who acknowledges that it will be ‘quite tough’ to move up next year.

Morrison said on the Paddock Pass podcast: “I was speaking to his manager, Chaz Davies. They haven’t completely lost hope of finding Senna a seat in MotoGP for 2027.

“They do know that it is going to be quite tough and there’s limited space available. But this is a very timely win.”

Honda and Ducati are battling to sign David Alonso, while Daniel Holgado has been linked with Tech3. The Aspar duo, currently P7 and P3 respectively, entered the year as title favourites.

They are at the front of the queue for a promotion, but Agius could be one of the beneficiaries if the premier class decides to comprehensively embrace youth at the start of the new regulations.
