Ducati’s expected move for Pedro Acosta may be contributing to the uncertainty over their Gresini partnership, according to a report.

It emerged during the Brazilian GP weekend that Gresini and Ducati are far apart in negotiations over a contract extension for 2027. VR46 are in line for a renewal and will snap up Fermin Aldeguer from Nadia Padovani’s squad.

Honda are pushing for a deal with Gresini as they look to expand their operation to three teams. The two teams were previously partners from 2002 to 2014.

Ducati’s expensive 2027 contracts explain lofty Gresini demands

Despite the unforeseen delays, Marc Marquez is still expected to sign a new contract at Ducati. 2025 world champion Marquez will net a significant pay rise after initially joining on a cut-price deal.

Meanwhile, Ducati are signing Acosta, arguably the most sought-after talent in Grand Prix racing, from KTM. These two deals, in combination with Aldeguer’s pay rise, will inevitably stretch their budget, even if Francesco Bagnaia’s expensive contract also comes off their books.

According to Corriere Romagna, Ducati will be left with ‘little money in their pocket’ once these contracts are signed. That may explain why they have quoted such a high price to Gresini, who currently can’t afford to buy the Desmosedici motorcycles.

Next year, MotoGP factories will exclusively deal out up-to-date bikes. With the regulations changing, they can no longer sell year-old machinery for a discounted rate.

Do Ducati already have a Gresini replacement in mind?

Gresini want an improved status within the Ducati roster if the relationship is to continue beyond 2026. While Alex Marquez finished runner-up in last year’s championship behind his brother, VR46 remain the second-in-command team.

Padovani is ‘upset’ with Ducati after losing Aldeguer, a move that highlights Gresini’s inferiority.

Team manager Davide Tardozzi is confident that Gresini want to stay with Ducati, but it’s clear that there are major obstacles in the way of a renewal right now.

In recent months, Tech3 have been linked with Ducati amid rumblings that new owner Guenther Steiner is dissatisfied with KTM. Perhaps they offer a plan B if the Gresini talks are unsuccessful, ensuring Ducati continue with six bikes.
