MotoGP sharing a race weekend with Formula 1 has been tipped in the past, and Marc Marquez has highlighted the positive impacts that it could have on the premier class as he predicts that they “will happen”.

Since Liberty Media acquired MotoGP, many fans of the premier class have been fretting over the possibility of the American media conglomerate introducing rules that would bring the category in line with Formula 1.

The pinnacle of single-seater motor racing has seen exponential growth since Liberty Media took over in 2017, and while its success with F1 bodes well for MotoGP, purists flinch at the idea of it becoming a like-for-like copy.

Who is going to win the 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix?

Let us know why in the comments!

MotoGP chief Carmelo Ezpeleta has talked about the possibility of uniting MotoGP and F1 on a single race weekend in the past, and has even received some backing from team bosses, namely KTM’s Pit Beirer.

The latest figure to share his opinion on the matter is Marc Marquez, who is a lot more open to the idea than die-hard fans may expect.

During an appearance on the Pelas Pistas podcast alongside Diogo Moreira ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend, Marquez issued a verdict on the proposal that MotoGP could share race weekends with F1 in the future.

The reigning world champion said, “I don’t know anything about it, but I think it will happen. I wouldn’t mind it. It’s true that you’re mixing audiences, but it wouldn’t be a bad thing, especially because right now, doing that would help MotoGP grow further.

“In other words, MotoGP would benefit more than Formula 1, because right now, Formula 1 is way ahead. And if you have to look at it, I say, you always have to look at the reality.

“Right now, Formula 1 is way ahead; MotoGP would benefit in this case, but Liberty will be the ones to decide, though each has its own audience and its own fans.”

MotoGP rookie Moreira was also asked for his thoughts on the proposal, noting that from a logistical standpoint, it could prove to be difficult.

“I think it would be quite difficult, because after all, we would be having two different categories in the same circuit,” replied Moreira.

“I’m not even talking about the track, but outside, truck, structure, it would be quite difficult. Difficult, but I think it would also be really cool.”

Despite being all for it, Marc Marquez also identified an issue with joint race weekends

Despite stating that he is all for sharing a race weekend with the F1 grid, Marquez also identified an issue that may crop up for his colleagues in MotoGP if the proposal does go through.

He added, “For me, one of the problems for motorbikes is that when a Formula 1 race finishes, there’s a lot of rubber on the track, a lot of tyre marks outside the racing line.

“Stones, too; we can’t have that on a motorbike – the track is always clean, and we don’t leave rubber on the circuit.”
