Pit Beirer reveals how MotoGP teams really feel about sharing a race weekend with F1

MotoGP has been brought under the same umbrella as Formula 1 after Liberty Media acquired the sport. This has led to talk that the two series could meet at the same Grand Prix weekend.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali intends to ‘share a lot of information’ with Carmelo Ezpeleta, his MotoGP counterpart. But racing at the same circuit on the same days would be unprecedented.

The two-wheel discipline already has stops at multiple circuits on the current F1 calendar. Naturally, these events tend to take place at least a couple of months apart, so a reshuffle would be required.

As reported by Speedweek, Ezpeleta has been talking about the possibility since 2023. The union under Liberty makes it appear far more realistic, but the logistics remain a concern.

Pit Beirer says MotoGP teams would love to join the F1 schedule for ‘mega’ weekend

Speaking to the same publication, Pit Beirer expressed his approval for the idea in the strongest possible terms. It’s a move that would no doubt divide MotoGP fans.

Those who also follow F1 may consider it a dream scenario, but there are others who will be determined to remain independent. They’ll also be wary of subscribing to a secondary status on the ‘undercard’.

KTM boss Beirer says the consensus in the paddock is that a double-header could take MotoGP ‘to the next level’. He believes that both sports could benefit.

He did also stress, though, that Liberty haven’t made any ‘official request’ at this stage. They’re leaving it to Dorna to continue running the sport for now.

“A mega-highlight like that would be cool,” he said. “We’ve been hoping for this from the paddock for a while now, for both series to race in Qatar, for example, where there isn’t that much going on anyway.

“This has already been discussed in the paddock, but there hasn’t been an official request from Liberty so far. Now we’ll let them present their plan for us in peace.

“We’re excited to see what ideas Liberty and Dorna have for expanding and improving the sport. We’re ready to go along with it.

“That would be a personal highlight for me. We have many friends in the Formula 1 paddock, but unfortunately, with our schedule, we never have time to look over to the other side.

“I think that would be cool; we want to take MotoGP to the next level. If MotoGP can generate even remotely the same level of excitement as Formula 1, then we all have to work together to make that happen.”

Lewis Hamilton has already given Liberty Media advice on building MotoGP

F1’s most successful driver, Lewis Hamilton, is a big fan of MotoGP. He nearly formalised that interest last year when he held talks with Gresini.

Hamilton sees ‘huge’ potential for MotoGP to grow. That may be why he was keen to have a stake in the sport.

In his eyes, the key is modernisation, because this has powered Liberty’s success in F1. They have more than doubled the value of their asset.

There were murmurs earlier in the year that Liberty could target Aprilia’s Massimo Rivola to run the ship, effectively making him MotoGP’s Domenicali. But that rumour has gone quiet for now.
