Grading every MotoGP team’s chances of signing Marc Marquez for the 2027 season

With his contract expiring at the end of the 2026 MotoGP season, Marc Marquez will no doubt be the most sought-after rider on the market in 2027.

Following his seventh premier class title and ninth overall in 2025, the Ant of Cervera will be the favourite to take the crown again in 2026 with Ducati. But beyond that, his future, along with most riders on the grid, is unknown.

The regulations changes are set to shake up the pecking order in 2027, making any move on the MotoGP rider market a huge risk. But naturally, Ducati will be looking to retain the Ant of Cervera.

Marc Marquez on his Ducati future

“In 2027, you have to think very carefully about what you’re doing. The regulations change: engines, tyres, aerodynamics. Nobody can guarantee that they’ll have the best bike.”

However, Ducati have paused their negotiations with Marquez, with the 32-year-old being quite ambiguous about his future. Ultimately, there will not be a manufacturer on the grid that will not want the Spaniard on board.

However, some teams stand a much better chance of signing Marquez than others. With that said, MotoGP News has graded each manufacturer’s chances of landing a deal for the best rider on the grid.

Ducati – A

After winning the 2025 title and being very likely to win again in 2026, staying put at Ducati would make the most sense for Marquez.

The 32-year-old is loved at the Borgo Panigale outfit and they have had the strongest bike on the grid for the past six years. It is said that Marquez wants a pay rise from Ducati for his next contract, and there is no reason why that would not be the team’s priority in 2027.

If the Spaniard is not entirely sure about the new regulations, Marquez must sign a one-year deal at Ducati. It would allow him to view the pecking order in 2027 and decide on his future for 2028, without burning bridges with his current team.

Honda – B

Realistically, only two MotoGP manufacturers stand a chance of signing Marquez – his current team and his former team. The latter, Honda, have already been heavily linked with the Spaniard.

“Honda is Honda. Honda will come back to the top with or without me. I believe they can do it.”

The Japanese giants are starting to make significant progress in getting back to the front of the grid. With rumours suggesting that Honda have built a strong bike in 2026, it could attract Marquez to make a sensational return in 2027.

Carlo Pernat says Honda have already spoken to Marquez, and they surely would not think twice about bringing him back. They have the budget to do it, but whether they will have the bike for him to win is another question.

Aprilia – C

In Marquez’s absence at the end of 2025 after his injury, Aprilia made serious strides forward to catch Ducati. With three wins in the last four events, come 2026, they could be a real threat.

Thanks to Marco Bezzecchi and test rider Lorenzo Savadori, the RS-GP has become a bike capable of fighting with the Ducatis and could potentially be a title contender. Jorge Lorenzo thinks Marquez would be ‘very fast’ at Aprilia; the team’s improvements could tempt him in 2027.

The problem for the Noale outfit is their budget, as they are unlikely to pay the £10m per year that Ducati are currently paying Marquez. With Bezzecchi performing brilliantly, Aprilia are likely to focus on retaining him in 2027.

Yamaha – D

Yamaha’s resources are being stretched enough as it is right now, and adding Marquez to the equation would only make things worse for the team.

Which bike should Marc Marquez ride in 2027?

The Iwata outfit are focused on developing their V4 bike for 2026, with no guarantees it will be competitive. And after that, they have to work on the 850cc machine for 2027, which again, is not certain to be a strong machine.

Yamaha are already paying Fabio Quartararo £10m a year, and the Frenchman wants out in 2027. Signing Marquez as his replacement would make no sense for their budget, and there is the risk that he will be uncompetitive on the bike.

KTM – F

When it comes to Marquez, or any big move for that matter, KTM can almost instantly be ruled out. Simply put, no one knows if the Austrian outfit will still be in MotoGP come 2027.

While the team’s bosses have reiterated their commitment to MotoGP until at least the new regulations, evidenced by their early tests of the 850cc bike, their desperate financial situation could limit them significantly, with Bajaj set to cut costs by 50%.

KTM will not have the resources to provide Marquez with a winning bike, nor will they have the budget to pay his high wages. But rather ironically, reports have linked his brother Alex Marquez to KTM for 2027 – they might get the iconic name on their bike after all.
