Marc Marquez and Alex Marquez have already been teammates twice in their MotoGP careers. But the world champion is unsure if it will happen again.
Marc was due to partner Alex at Honda in 2020, but suffered a season-ending arm injury at the opening round. By the time he returned, his younger brother had been demoted to LCR.
They would later share a garage again at Gresini, even if Marc only spent one year at Nadia Padovani’s team before moving on to the Ducati factory squad.
This season, Alex has taken a leap and bagged an unexpected P2 in the championship. After winning his first two Grands Prix, he will ride a factory-spec GP26 next year.
Marc Marquez says it would be ‘very difficult’ to share a factory team with Alex Marquez
During an appearance on El Larguero, Marquez was asked whether he’d ‘enjoy’ partnering Alex again. If they were to reunite, one would expect it to be at the Ducati works team.
While Marquez won’t confirm that he’s staying at Ducati just yet, he has repeatedly said that there’s no reason for a happy rider to change teams.
Francesco Bagnaia’s future is uncertain after he dropped out of the top three in an unrecognisable campaign. If there were to be a change, Alex would theoretically be one of the first in line – but Marc has played down the possibility.
“We’ll hardly see it, because it will be very difficult to share a factory team, the way the world championship is,” he said.
“Having said that, if the relationship hasn’t changed until now, nothing will change it now. This year has been the first year that we have really competed for the same thing, and it has united us more than ever. I think that’s what makes the difference.”
Who will Ducati sign instead with Alex Marquez move unlikely?
These comments follow a recent report that Alex Marquez isn’t a realistic option for Ducati despite receiving upgraded equipment.
Instead, teammate Fermin Aldeguer may be in line for a Ducati promotion because he’s already contracted to the Bologna outfit. Aldeguer was overlooked for a GP26, but is still expected to wear red in the medium to long term.
If they look outside their stable, Ducati could target Fabio Quartararo, whom many expect to leave Yamaha. Pedro Acosta is unlikely to partner Marc Marquez but has held talks with VR46 already.
Of course, Bagnaia has the advantage of incumbency and has already won two world titles under Luigi Dall’Igna. If he can start scoring consistent podiums again next year, it may be enough for a contract renewal.
