Ducati director reveals how long injured Marc Marquez will need to be back to ‘100%’

Marc Marquez is out for the rest of the 2025 MotoGP season as he prioritises his recovery from a right shoulder and collarbone injury.

The Ducati rider suffered a heavy crash in Indonesia after Marco Bezzecchi took him out on the opening lap. Marquez landed on his right shoulder in the gravel trap at turn seven, fracturing his collarbone and sustaining ligament damage.

Ducati hoped to have Marquez back in Valencia for the post-season test, with it being thought that surgery was not required. However, after further check-ups, he was operated on to aid his recovery.

Subsequently, the 2025 MotoGP champion will miss the remainder of the season and the post-season test. Michele Pirro will replace him at Sepang, as he did at Phillip Island, after Nicolo Bulega turned down the chance to replace Marquez.

Ducati will now be focused on getting the Spaniard back up to fitness. Thanks to Jorge Martin, Marquez can have additional private tests to get him back up to speed after the Aprilia rider got the rules changed following his injuries in 2025.

The 32-year-old is in for a long recovery, however, due to the complications of his injury. Speaking to Sky Sport Italy, Ducati sporting director Mauro Grassilli says that Marquez will need until early January next year to get back to full fitness.

“Unfortunately, he won’t be ready for Valencia,” he said. “He needs some time to recover; there are these four weeks where he must be absolutely immobilised.

“After that, there will be another week for physical recovery, for the various treatments he needs. Then, like every athlete does, he will have to start training: he will do it with the V4 and V2 to be 100% ready, hopefully, by the beginning of next year, in early January.”

Marquez found it ‘hard’ watching the Australian GP from home, his brother Alex Marquez revealed. He wants to get back onto a MotoGP bike as soon as possible.

MotoGP fans say it’s for the best that Marquez is out for the rest of 2025. He must take the time to recover and avoid any unnecessary risks.

Jorge Lorenzo sent a ‘dangerous’ warning to Marquez, saying that he could be more conservative after his latest injury. The Ant of Cervera knows better than anyone what it is like to go through a long-term injury.

He will have learned from his highside at Jerez in 2020 and subsequent long recovery that he will have to prioritise his health. Marquez will be targeting a return for testing in 2026 as he looks to grab his 10th world championship.
