Fabio Quartararo has been one of the most impressive MotoGP riders in 2025 but has little to show for his efforts.
The Frenchman has scored five pole positions and has been in electric form over one lap, only for his Yamaha to let him down on a Sunday. At the heart of their woes is the M1’s outright lack of speed, which the manufacturer hopes will no longer be a factor soon, with the introduction of the V4 engine.
It has been three years since Quartararo’s last victory, which is not fair for a rider of his calibre. The MotoGP rider market is going to come calling soon, and he’s going to have plenty of choice when it comes to picking where to go next.
Quartararo’s pressure has forced Yamaha into a change, with the Japanese outfit set to hand a wildcard entry to Augusto Fernandez at the next race in Malaysia, in a bid to speed up their V4 operations. Yamaha have made Quartararo a colossal offer, but it’ll be hard for him to stay while they’re struggling so much.

Quartararo wants to race for Yamaha in 2027, but has admitted that he’s not afraid to leave them if they cannot deliver what he expects of them. It’s a fairly simple ask from the 26-year-old, as he just wants to be able to compete with the very best.
For three seasons now, that hasn’t been possible. Quartararo knows Yamaha are behind with their development of the new V4 engine, and it means that they may need to perform a miracle if they’re to produce a bike good enough to win in 2026.
If they remain where they are, it seems almost a certain possibility that their superstar rider will join a rival. In an interview with the Spanish edition of Motorsport.com, Quartararo has revealed that he is already ‘thinking internally’ about his next MotoGP move.
“Rather than moving already, what I’m doing is thinking internally, what I want, what I’d be willing to do, what kind of move I’d like to make,” he said.
“But talking about that future is still premature. As you said, though, the market starts moving earlier every year, and you can’t fall asleep, because everyone wants the best position possible.”

Although things have improved slightly compared to the last few seasons, Yamaha do not look like threatening for titles any time soon.
Even Honda, who were pretty bad in 2024, have taken big steps in 2025. Arguably, they have been bigger than Yamaha’s, without having a superstar rider.
Quartararo has been quick to remind his team that they now have ‘very little’ time to turn the tide, and convince him that they’re the outfit to take a gamble on beyond 2027.
“What they [Yamaha] really need to do is find a solution,” he said. “They don’t have much time, very little. Yamaha hasn’t managed it in years, and I hope they can in a few months.
“Because they don’t have much time either, that’s clear in my mind. I don’t have much time to fulfil my dreams.”
